Why I Have The Opportunity To Travel To America
Appealing as travel may be, I have not had the opportunity to wander much outside of the southeastern United States. Even when I have had the chance to venture, it has been to visit loved ones or vacation for a few days. I am not stating this for anyone to empathize with me, but rather to express the fact that I have never experienced another culture outside of the U.S., and other than watching the nightly world news, I am not aware of non-American issues. As a privileged American, I know there are many ways to help other countries, if only we got to experience the problem first-hand. Personally, I believe this trip would help me gain a new understanding of current global issues, as well as what the future brings regarding those issues.

With these inevitable conversations, whoever I am conversing with will also gain my understanding, thus enhancing globalization within the U.S. I believe this opportunity would enlighten me on other problems throughout the world that we do not typically hear on television, for which I could rely on the native people for sources instead. Following graduation, I hope to take advantage of a lighter schedule and take that time to dedicate it to others, whether it be here in the U.S. or on an international mission trip. The goal is to eventually become an Occupational Therapist for which I will be helping others improve their overall functionality. Other countries are in dire need for this service, and I hope that one day I can fulfill that duty in some

This semester I am taking five other courses besides this one. One of my more interesting classes is Kinesiology 220, otherwise known as Introduction to Athletic Injuries. This class focuses on injury in sport and how to deal with it as an athlete, athletic trainer, coach, or physical therapist. We learn all about how injuries are onset, whether it be acute (a direct impact or action resulting in injury), or chronic (an ongoing action that slowly wears down a part of the body resulting in injury). We also discuss what types of injuries occur more in certain sports, or even because of what gender you are. For example, women are more prone to knee injuries such as ACL tears than men are. Studies have been done and while there is no set reason…

People always say that living in a large city is a great quality, they like it because it let them get a lot of benefits; in my opinion, every place has its drawbacks; there is no perfect place that we can say: “It is formidable”. In the other hand, they are people who hate living in a large city, and they prefer the small one. As far as I live in Raleigh, I do not like it due to three reasons: change of weather, few means of transportation, and quiet life.…

This summer, I was blessed with an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to travel to Haiti on a mission trip. Of course, I was slightly nervous about traveling to a third world country, where I did not know the language, and the only people I would know would be the people from the church that I was traveling with. However, I knew this would be a life changing experience, so I took the leap! I am so grateful I did because every second was worth it! Our mission was to work with orphans, help homeschool English speaking children, and meet with the women’s group of Grand Savann Christian Church.…

Gazing out of the airplane window, I saw the words Mei Guo— “beautiful country” in Chinese—painted on the airport terminal. My mother and I immigrated to America when I was a small child from Taishan, China. She aimed to remove me from a life where society would limit my options and ostracize me due to my father’s blindness from Retinitis Pigmentosa and the family’s lack of proper education. My father was willing to let go of his only child because he, too, knew it would open infinite opportunities for me to succeed. Though my new life in America seemed prosperous at first, I soon realized I needed to create opportunities for myself despite our lack of resources.…

Generations of people have lived in America, and each generation has held its own opinion on what being an American means. Every individual has their own story of how they came to be American and what they believe that this title can do for them. I grew up here. My parents and grandparents grew up here. To me being an American is not about how you got here or how long you have been here. It is about why you are here and what you plan to do with your life.
