The basic combat training was challenging was physically and mentally. I was the oldest female in my platoon, so the drill sergeants were extra hard on me. I never once told anyone that I was a daughter of a retired Army Colonel. The reason being, one they would think that I was going to use my father’s rank for special treatment, and two I didn’t want them to make my life harder than what it was. I really didn’t have much time to sleep or relax. I was lucky to have 2 to 4 hours asleep during my nine-month deployment. Between lunch and dinner was my time to do laundry and prepping the food for dinner. I have made gourmet meals for the guys, and most of the time, I would ask the guys what they miss the most when it came to home cook meal. And also made sure if the guys who were on mission. I made sure that they had their meals saved for them. I did a lot of research on different recipes online to get meal ideas too.
Along with making meals, I had to make sure when the jingle bird, which is a helicopter that delivers food, I had to put all the food away. It’s not like you go to the grocery store, and have bags of food. It was in kicker boxes and pallets of food. My job was pretty tough, and mentally draining. And I don’t regret picking out my job
