If someone is quiet on the team, for example, I will start talking to them and get to know them. I will engage everyone in conversations, and make sure everyone feels welcome on the team. I want to make sure that people know that I am an approachable person, and that anyone on the team can come to me anytime for any reason. Being a leader in this sense has a greater impact than leading the team in workouts or during a race because at the end of the day being a part of a team is so much more than the actual sport. S.A.L.T stands for Student Athlete Leadership Training, and it is a club that you have to get chosen in order to be in. When we would have these meetings we would talk about what it means to be a good teammate, what is means to be a good leader, and what it takes to be a leader. We would read excerpts from books, and watch videos of examples of what a great leader looks like on a sports team. As a group we would discuss our thoughts and ideas about whichever topic we were discussing. This club was very beneficial because I was able to take what I already knew about being a leader, and apply it to our discussions as a group and learn even more. What I realized about being a good leader from my peers through our discussions was that before being a good leader, you have to be a good person and have good character. Character and leadership are traits that are connected because if you don’t have good character, how can you expect people to follow your example? I also just wanted to add that unfortunately, S.A.L.T did not meet this year, and that is why I’ve only been active in this club for my sophomore
