which matches very well with the personality of a biological technician. Biology requires people who value recognition, achievement and independence in their job. I found this job to be perfect for me because people in this career have investigative interests while being in realistic environments. Some duties and tasks that are performed on this job are cleaning the work area, gathering and preparing samples for analysis, conducting tests, and documenting work.
Usually to become a biological technician, a bachelor’s degree in biology is required, a degree in ecology, physiology or microbiology can meet the requirement as well. Not only is a degree required but skills in communication, analyses, critical-thinking, and observation are a just as crucial as a degree to be hired as a biological technician. San Diego offers programs in Associate, Bachelor, Master, and Doctor Degrees for biology. Personally I plan to complete my transfer credits at MiraCosta then continue my education at Cal State San Marcos to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Biology.
The job outlook for a biological technician is a ten percent growth each year, which is average for all jobs. This job continues to grow because there will always be a need in the treatment of diseases, new ways to maintain and improve environment issues, and biological technicians are needed to find alternative energy. Without biological technicians there would not be much progress.
Some disadvantages of this job may be having long hours, a lot of time in a lab and the field is very competitive for funding.
Advantages are great pay, rewarding, excitement and keeps you sharp. Something interesting I found out about being a biological technician is that most of their research is funded by grants. The researchers write grant proposals to institutions, companies and government organizations to get money to help fund their research. For any more questions I have about becoming a biological technician, I can contact the Association of Professional Biology by visiting their website at www.professionalbiology.com , they’re located at 300-1095 McKenzie Avenue, Victoria, BC V8P 2L5 in Canada.
The second occupation that I looked into was nursing. Nursing was presented to me as a result of my assessment test. People who work in the nursing field usually have the interest code of SIC which is social, investigative and conventional. My interest code is realistic, investigative and conventional. I picked this career because it seemed like a challenge to me, biological technician was a perfect match but nursing would push me out of my comfort zone and it got me …show more content…
curious.
Nurses provide patient care through education, treatment, emotional support and so many other ways. A typical day of being a nurse would require recording patients’ symptoms and illnesses, set up care plans, observe and record patients, consult with other healthcare professionals and other countless things. Duties all depend on what type of nurse you are and where you work out of. No matter your title or location, all nurses require certain skills, these include, organization, speaking, compassion, attention to detail, and emotional stability. The educational requirements are more complicated, RNs can specialize in a specific type of patient care. California offers programs for Certificate, Associates, Bachelors, Masters and PhD degrees is nursing. In all the programs anatomy, physiology, nutrition, psychology and biology will be covered. Some entry level positions may only require a certificate while others will require a bachelor’s degree.
Becoming a licensed RN does not mean you’re stuck with one career.
An advantage of being a registered nurse is being able to pick if you want to specialize in neonatal care, rehabilitation or any other things you can specialize in the health field, it’s your choice. Another benefits is a good salary, typically $43,000-$63,000 a year in California, plus benefits and bonuses. A disadvantage would be long hours, attachment to patients and illness to constant exposure to sick patients.
The job outlook for a registered nurse looks very promising. There is a 19% projected employment in this career for the next ten years. The demand for these services will increase because people are living long (larger population to care for), retired workers will need replacements and healthcare will always be in demand.
Nursing was something I had always been curious about doing and I learned that there are so many opportunities and responsibilities that come with being an RN. I did not know that there were different types of nurses I always thought there was only one type of nurse like the ones I would see when I went to the doctors for a checkup but I was wrong. As of right now I do not see myself becoming a registered nurse but if in the future I ever changed my mind I know that MiraCosta and Cal State San Marcos have fantastic nursing programs where I can become a RN. I found the American Nurses Association at www.nursingworld.org where I can find more information about this career, this association

All in all this research project has made choosing a major and finding a career way less complicated than it really it. I am really glad I had the opportunity to take time and sort out what it is that I want to do with the rest of my life. From this assignment I learned that I do want to pursue a career as a biological technician and complete a bachelor’s degree in biology.
