Why I Want To Pursue A Biomedical Engineering Degree
I initially became interested in pursuing a career in biomedical engineering when I had knee surgery in 2011, which disabled me from being able to fully use my knee. My career goal is to be a Biomedical Engineer and I believe the BRITE Program here at North Carolina Central University will help me reach my goal. As alum from the City of Medicine Academy here in Durham, I have been exposed to the field of health services and medical care. I know that pursuing a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at NCCU is the right choice for my undergraduate education. In the next 5 years, I want to see myself with an established career. The BRITE program caters to about 95% of their graduates having a secure job right after their graduation. To reach my goal of having a …show more content…
I want to get out of my comfort zone and impact the lives of the people around me. During my sophomore year, I want to begin to get recruited for a study abroad experience. I want to get my trip paid for because I know that I’m not financially able to pay for it myself or even with the help of my parents. After completing my research, I figured out that there aren’t that many study abroad programs for Biomedical Engineering (BME) because it is such a tedious and difficult major. In the summer of 2015, there is a study abroad experience in Beijing, China that runs from May 25 to July 31. The program cost is around $5000.00 which includes 4 days of meals per week, housing, and mandatory insurance. The tuition ranges from $3600.00 to $3850.00 depending on your location and of course the student fee is around $650.00. The experience will be a burden on my family if they had to pay it, that’s why I’m going to try to start early to build myself up on NCCU’s campus so that I am able to possibly receive another scholarship from the

Before I began my program here at University of Phoenix my learning and personal growth was not a major factor. In May 2002, I was faced with a life or death situation. I was attending a private college in New Jersey. I went in for an annually check-up and was informed that I was pregnant. That day changed my life drastically. I was working two jobs and going to school part-time, so I always have been hard-working and a dedicated individual. Learning that I was about to have a child immediately made me become unfocused. In December 2002, I was about to give birth when I broke my lower left tibia and fibula. I was rushed to the hospital when I had an emergency surgery to bring my baby boy to life. My leg was still broken when I gave birth. My baby was healthy. This was happy and sad news all at once. I had to then prepare for orthopedic surgery. My body was rejecting the screws that were put in place for proper healing. Five surgeries later in a span of two years I realized I missed most of my only son’s life. I was could not walk and carry him. I was placed on non-weight bearing orders from my doctor for two years. After my surgeries, I wanted to continue my learning. This time the odds are greater. My son will benefit from me going back to school. I began my studies at Axia College. Starting my educational journey at Axia was the best adult decision I have made for myself and family. At this point in my life, I was collecting disability to support my family. Although disability helped, it was not nearly close to what I was making at a regular employment. My career goal is to work at Prudential Insurance Company in the billing department. I am faced with a major dent in my resume. I have been disabled for the past 10 years and I understand employers may think that I am not experienced enough to work at their…

Essentially my passion that I possess as a nurse professional places me in a position to not want to see anyone go without health care. Through my experiences an Administrator and a Director of Nursing, I was able to not only provide some form of health care to the elderly but I also was able to provide a comfortable place for them to live. In some instances the resident or resident’s family could not afford the monthly living expenses it took to reside at the community in which I managed. I however was in a position to give rent allowances for those that were in that type of predicament.
