Why I Want To Pursue My Scholarship
My education has been a unique journey; by receiving a scholarship, I will be able to continue my educational adventure. When I was five years old, my five-month-old sister Abigaile had a sever reaction to her vaccines. This reaction caused epilepsy and left her permanently disabled. With a vaccine injury, there is no such thing as a “cure”. My family began traveling across the United States to do damage control for my younger sister. This traumatic experience affected my family financially, emotionally, and for me: educationally.

Between traveling, stress, doctor visits, and my sister’s medical emergencies. my home schooling was severely neglected. I would oftentimes go for months without doing any schoolwork: sometimes it would be a whole year. Thankfully, when I was twelve my father began bringing home library books that were above my reading level. These books gave me a challenge and furthered my love for reading and history. Unfortunately, I still lacked other places in my education. When I was fourteen I was unable to do double digit multiplication and I personally never remember writing an essay till I was seventeen.

This taught me to teach myself and persist in my education. I learned that things will happen in life that I will be unable to control, but I still will press on. I learned that although I may not reach my dreams, I still need to try my best to achieve them, because I have a better chance of achieving them if I at least try. I also learned that I cannot be the best, but I can still be my best if I truly apply myself. Getting a scholarship would help me in my educational journey, however, I recognized this may not happen. Regardless of the outcome I will still find a way to improve myself and somehow, I will continue my plan to get my bachelors in business and pursue my dream

School came pretty easy for me for most of my life. I was homeschooled sense day one of my academic career and my mom taught me ninety percent of what I know today. I usually made good grades in outside classes and I did all of my work assigned. Even though I didn’t like it in the least I still passed with mostly A’s and B’s. Math was always my least favorite subject but honesty, as much as I hate to admit it, I’m decent at it. One thing that I really didn’t like to do was read. For whatever reason whenever reading was assigned I rolled my eyes and wished there was a way out of it. This problem never really made much sense to me. I just didn’t find delight in reading a book.…

My journey starts when I leave Puebla, Mexico eight years ago without knowing a single word in English to being a first generation college student in the United States. My family consists of my mother, two older sisters, my twin brother, and left behind my alcoholic, abusive father. I have been working in the hospitality industry ever since I arrived, from being a dishwasher to becoming front of the house supervisor. Initially without English knowledge or particular skills I had to settle into working in the lowest paid and grueling position in a restaurant, dishwasher. I was able to move up the ladder by taking night English as a Second Language class at City College of San Francisco and working up to ten hours a day every day. Every semester I took ESL classes, went hand in hand with promotions at work or better employment opportunities, to all the way to becoming supervisor of the restaurant. For this reason, I found in education an exit to poverty and a path to mind enrichment.. My proudest achievements are getting a GED, obtaining a high school diploma after completing the transitional studies program and now a 4.0 GPA in my first semester of credit classes, which I took to transfer to a four year university.…

I am Ciara Mauldin and I am applying for your Available Scholarship at Fortis College, which is the Lindsey Nicholson Memorial Scholarship Fund. Mr. LaBarron Evans came to Mattie T. Blount High School and spoke with my class about college decisions, and also mentioned that he was the Assistant Director of Admissions at Fortis College. I spoke with him one on one; he encouraged me to come take a visit at Fortis College. I am now going to tell you “Why I Want to join Fortis College.” On your web page as you all described that four year colleges are not for everybody, that you all prepare students with the education they need for success in life, and to reach the goals they are trying to reach. I don't think a four year college would be for me at all because I need a smaller environment, where I won’t get distracted as much, and a smaller population. The program is much faster, only eight months. I am only 17 now; I will be 18 when I graduate on March 14th, 2014 from Fortis College, which is great and better for me.…
