Then she told me, “Are you sure because that is exactly what your older sister said and she ended up pregnant.” After hearing those words, I knew for sure I wanted to be the first in my family to attend college. I wanted to prove her what I said I meant it and was going to make it come true.
A situation where I showed grit and persevered was when I made the decision to attend college. College for me was a huge step towards my future. If I made a choice I wanted to stick with it, being in this situation made me question myself many times if I was making the right choice. Going to college made me feel that I was ready to take anything that came at me. Many people told me that college was challenging, but what they did not know is that I love challenges. I told myself maybe college is not for me, so I decided the change my thinking strategy. I made the habit of saying a positive statement after a negative statement. Both of my parents are from Mexico, coming from non-educated, hardworking families. Four-year colleges and universities vary in their degrees of selectivity and some do have open admissions policies. Some selections is often based on competitive factors such as standardized test scores, such as the SAT and SCT, high school grade point average and coursework, letters of recommendation, and admissions essays. A high school diploma or a GED is generally required in order for an applicant to be admitted.…

Throughout my life I have had to deal with many problems and situations. I have always tried to better myself, but it was always very hard. I finally decided to return to school, get my degree in communication and start a career that I enjoy. I was most motivated to finish school, because I made a promise to my mother before she passed with liver cancer in 2003. At that time, I was going to cosmetology school and had two little girls. I remember her looking weak and frail in her hospital bed. I could see how tired and almost sedated she was, but still she worried about how my future was going to turn out.
