The purpose of the public education system is to prepare students for the life ahead of them. So, then, what are they headed towards? Ours is an electronic world, a digital era. Most businesses today utilize computers (themselves utilizing keyboards and type) to store all of their documents. To be well equipped to handle this Age of Information, students should be proficent in typing and printing, not cursive.
Learning and using cursive has been shown to improve brain development, but that isn't the purpose of our schools. Ensuring a child's brain develops well is a matter of health, and therefore the duty of the parents. That role has been filled by print, and this is proven by cursive's absence in everyday life and print's abundance. We all need to be able to read and write in the same way to communicate effectively, and communication is vital to our modern way of life. Learning cursive today should be an optional hobby, not a school
