Why Is Martin Luther King Jr Influential
1929, the U.S is going through major changes. At this time, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born. MLK Jr, this person was going to be a major change to the U.S. MLK Jr. was a very influential person. He led many to realize about this terrible segregation in the U.S. MLK was always this way. His famous “I had a dream” speech encouraged people all over the U.S to fight against segregation. But how did this happen? Why is he so influential? The answer lies throughout his life. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. He didn’t go by Martin back then though, he was first Michael. His family consisted of him, his mother Alberta Williams King, his father Michael King Sr., his older sister Willie Christine, and his younger brother Alfred
Daniel Williams King. Martin and his family lived in rural Georgia, his grandfather was a rural minister for years, then he moved to Atlanta, and married Jennie Celeste. He then became a pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church. This started the trend of pastors and ministers that had MLK and his father following this trend. Michael King Sr. had taken over his father’s place after they had moved to Atlanta in 1926. Martin entered a public school at the age of 5, he was a very precocious student. He then later attended Booker T. Washington High School, in which he skipped the ninth, and eleventh grade. Booker then attended Morehouse College, at the age of 15. His education also led to him being such an important figure. Martin Luther King earned a sociology degree from Morehouse College. He then later attended the liberal Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania. King attended plenty of colleges including, Yale and Edinburgh, which is in Scotland. He then later attended Boston University. With his work on the Doctorate, he met his future wife, Coretta Scott. They got married in June 1953 and had 4 children. While he worked on his college work, he became a pastor at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. He finally was awarded his P.h.D in 1955 at the age of 25. Not soon after, the montgomery bus boycott began. MLK’s work on civil rights led him to be VERY influential. Beginning with his work on the bus boycott, MLK was chosen as a leader for this event, due to his background.
