Welfare in America is defined as financial support given to people in need. Some examples of welfare are social security, social assistance, pension, unemployment, and disability. While some of these can be beneficiary to those in need, America has taken “in need” too far. Some Americans can physically not work because of many reasons. While it is great that America has an option for those who cannot work, most people reaping the benefits are not incapable. Many Americans have learned how to work the system of government welfare and are taking benefits that they do not need just because they are plain lazy. Welfare is making recipients dependent and gives them no ambition. The government is at fault too, making the unemployment benefits greater than many actual jobs. If you could make more being a couch potato and taking unemployment benefits, than getting a minimum wage job, why is there a reason to work? Many government workers and minimum wage jobs don’t pay enough for a comfortable living, but unemployment benefits do. “By what right can someone who works for a living, who has his own family to worry about, be required to support somebody else, or, what is worse, somebody else’s illegitimate child?” (Levin, 1995). Welfare isn’t just paying for those who can’t work anymore. It is unfair to hardworking Americans to take part of their paycheck for those who are dependent on the government. Americans can go without welfare. When this is suggested, arguments of illegitimate children born to women who cannot afford to take care of them. But why is it another person’s fault that this happens? The mother and father of the child are responsible for it. They consented to sexual intercourse and knew the consequences of it. Because women would be aware that food stamps, subsidized housing, or other government help, it would make the number of unplanned children go down.
