Later Morning Start Would you like to start the school day later than 8:00a.m.? Or even wake up a little bit later than usual? Or would you like to be able to concentrate betting your classes for better grades? Well, according to Scientific American, schools that start 8:35 or later have seen grades in math, English, science, and social studies rise. For the sake of teenagers and schools, I personally think we should be starting at a later time. By starting school later, teens will be able to get the sleep they need to preform their very best the next day. According to Jennifer LeComte, director of the Pediatric program at Christian Care's Wilmington Hospital Health Center, students should get between eight and nine hours of sleep. Bad sleeping habits can lead to am increase in depression. With very little amount of sleep, students tend to act out or become very angry and have a harder time focusing in their classes. Not getting enough sleep at night can lead to mental and physical health problems, along with an increase in car accidents and a decline in academic courses. …show more content…
The lack of sleep for teens is very complex, but easily resolved.
In today's society teenagers have homework, extracurricular activities, jobs, and social media to keep them busy during the evening. The AAP, or American Academy of Pediatrics, recommends pediatrician so counsel teens and parents about healthy sleeping habits, and enforce a media curfew. The AAP urges schools to start at a time where teens ca. Get eight and a half to nine and a half hours of sleep at night. Many studies show that an average of adolescents in the United Sates are chronically sleep deprived and pathologically sleepy. These are the most common, and easily fixable public health issues in the U.S. today. By starting school later we could prevent serious health issues, and be able to improve the amount of sleep that teenagers should be
getting. If we start school later the grades and GPA of students will improve tremendously. Studies have shown that students who have English, and math later in the day will score higher on standardize test. In 2012 a study found out that schools starting later than usual saw standardize test scores increase over a two points in math in average. High school students who regularly score C, D or F on school tests and assignments get, on average, half an hour less of sleep per night, than high school students who regularly get A and B on their final grades. In North Carolina a school district by the name of Wake County School did a studied, and it showed that the majority of the kids scored higher on their standardized test when starting later. In other recent findings schools with a start time of 8:30, has had a fifty-three percent drop in the number of failing grades.also the number of days that students were suspended for disciplinary reasons dropped from 166 to 19 in some school cases. Being able to keep teenagers in school and having a high grade average can all happen by starting the school day an hour later. The result of starting school later and have a positive effect on the number of teenage crashes. By setting the time for school back at least an hour we could decease the number of student accidents each year. With starting g school later it will be brighter out for the students who can drive. If school started later it would give the student drivers more time to wake up and become fully aware of what is around them. Teens who are able to get at least eight hours of sleep are less likely to get in an accident on their way to school. On average teen crash rates for a county in Minnesota, said that 2 years after the change the school start time, accidents dropped 16.5%, compared to the 2 years prior to the change. Whereas crash rates for the rest of the state increased by 7.8% over the same time period. By increasing the amount of sleep a teenager gets at night can decrease the students daytime sleepiness and can possibly decrease the odds of crashing their vehicles when driving. There is an estimated 100,000 accidents each year due to lack of sleep the night before. More than half of the drivers are 25 years old and younger. You may be asking how will we be able to get the students to school at a late time if we start work at eight? Well there are things called buses that will take student to and from school at these times. Another question you might be asking is what about the kids who have to work after school jobs? How would that fit in to the later school schedule? Teenagers who have after school jobs are in more need of sleep. For those students who must work long hours to help support their families, the school system has used a waiver of a full-day to accommodate them. By starting school later we would be able to decrease the amount of accidents. Also help teens be healthier and be less sleepy during the school day. Students grades will go up on standardize test.
