“You go to Chapel Hill and try to go to a Carolina-Duke game, good luck trying to find a ticket. It’s nationally televised. There’s so much money that goes behind just one basketball game. I do think the players from both sides should definitely see some type of benefit.” (Marvin Williams). Marvin Williams was a college basketball player who thinks that the NCAA will be able to pay their players. As Marvin says the NCAA is capable of doing this so if one of the most successful college basketball players ever and who was behind the scenes for many years he will know best about what is going on. First, the NCAA rules should be changed and let colleges pay their players because it will help the athletes with financial aid. In Malcolm Lemmons article Should, NCAA Athletes Get Paid he explains this quote, “ A player would be able to actually afford a decent meal and possibly send some of that money back home to support their families.”(Lemmons 1). Players in the NCAA usually come from poor places in the America and are not able to pay for meals at school and same with their families. This helps prove the point because many athletes come from low class urban area and parents do not have enough money to make good meals and also support their children by living in a nice area. Colleges have been paying player’s parents benefits or gifts for their …show more content…
NCAA player should be paid because playing college basketball is a full time job and they are bringing in revenue for their school and making no money from that. Madison Martinez explains how the NCAA athlete misses more than two weeks of school. They also have to miss school because of the NCAA tournament, which can last up to two weeks. (Martinez 1). Player should be played because it is so much work to be on a college sports team and they are getting nothing in return but some education that they will have to miss. In chucks article he says how it can encourage students to work harder. Also athletes getting paid will help encourage students to work hard and be able to stay on the court and earn their pay.(Schilken 1). This is important because most colleges nowadays does not care if its athletes actually take the class they will just pay someone to do the class for them and not care about school at all. Many schools care about their student’s grade but others don’t so paying their player would change that completely. This would change because all schools would care about their grades and if their students do not they they will not. Paying player will get them to care about grades. These are the reasons why the NCAA should pay their

In the article “7 Common Sense Reasons Why College Athletes Should Be Paid,” the author, Maurice Peebles conducts an interview with Jay Bilas to get his input on whether college athletes should be paid. He shares how the NCAA is a multi-billon dollar business that limits athletes in particular on earning money. Also, he gives examples of different perspectives that people can relate to in different industries of how this situation would apply to them. Furthermore, he explains that college athletes would benefit more from being paid and it would require them to get a better education by not allowing them to leave college early to go onto the professional stage. The school’s are benefitting much more than the players are because the players are the reason why all of this money is coming in, the schools are just being represented and then paid. The scholarships given do not equal to what some college athletes are worth, because some out there could easily…

The NCAA is in charge of several sports from basketball and football to wrestling and golf. The NCAA is in charge of three various divisions, which are based on the size and success of the school. With this issue, many sports analysts have started to make their very own statements on it. Michael Wilbon is a sports analyst for ESPN, when debating about whether college athletes should be paid or not, Wilbon wrote in an article, “The best college athletes in the two revenue-producing sports have always been worth much more than tuition, room, board and books. … Yet, no player can benefit from that work. The players have become employees of the universities and conferences as much as students -- employees with no compensation, which not only violates common decency but perhaps even the law” (Wilbon). People need to understand the great amount of unfairness that college athletes have been enduring. The NCAA is making millions of dollars off of these college athletes, and these college athletes are simply not receiving one penny of it. The NCAA is not treating their college athletes right in the slightest bit, but could arguably be violating the law, as well. Therefore, college athletes should be paid because of their diligent efforts for the…

The NCAA manages everything in college sports, and is considered a non-profit organization, all of the money they make is redistributed to the colleges that are part of the NCAA. Just football, and basketball generates 6 billion dollars a year, and not one penny of that money would've been made if it were not for the student athletes. In "Pay To Play: Should College Athletes Be Paid?," Adele Birkenes and Akash Bagaria who have written six articles about student life states "It is only reasonable that student athletes have a share in the millions of dollars that their sports businesses bring in." The statements by the authors bring to light this one simple question, why can the athletes be rewarded for making the NCAA and colleges successful? Although paying college athletes is not an easy decision for the people in charge, many support paying student athletes. There has been many proposals dating back to the 1950's, but there are five proposals that have a very good chance of getting passed, and used. In the article "Point/Counterpoint: Paying College Athletes," Dennis Johnson states "...former NCAA President Miles Brand's suggestion and allocate athletes include a $2,000-$3,000 cost of living increase to full scholarships...This would provide the athletes with the needed income for clothes, laundry, sundries, travel,…

We often look at college athletes as miniature stars. The question is, why should student’s athlete get a paycheck for playing amateur level sports? Athletes complain about how they do not get enough for playing a sport. They are forgetting that they are being rewarded with a half or full scholarship. The main goal for these athletes is being academically successful. Not who has the best jump shot or who fumbled a ball, that does not matter. The essence of playing college level has been taken out of place, now replaced with the mindsets of professional athletes. Did they forget? You are not professionals. The love of the game has been through extortion for the love of money. Paying college athletes will lead the students astray from what they attended the institution to accomplish in the first place, that is, to earn a degree, not to gain a compensation.…

People believe that the athletes should get paid for the performances they put on, it would help support the athlete through their college years. “In fiscal year 2012–13, the NCAA generated $913 million in total revenue—$769 million of which came from the 2013 March Madness men’s basketball tournament (most of this money came from television networks paying for broadcasting rights). During the 2013–14 fiscal year, the NCAA generated $989 million in total revenue. However, none of this money found its way to the student-athletes whose talents and efforts produced the revenue, even though colleges, universities, and the NCAA market college athletics with the intent of generating revenue,” (Garcia). The money that was generated by the NCAA never went toward the athletes, after all, they were the ones bringing the profit in.…

Basketball legend, Michael Jordan once said, “in college I never realized the opportunities available to a pro athlete. I've been given the chance to meet all kinds of people, to travel and expand my financial capabilities, to get ideas and learn about life, to create a world apart from basketball.” College players still do not have the same amenities that professional athletes have. Why not give the college athlete a portion of what professionals get since they are working just as hard in their respective sport? With all the money that flows in and out of college sports, college athletes should be paid for playing for their school. Paying the amauter athlete would open up many new windows for not only the player,…

College players need to get paid for what they do. When college players do not get paid, they do not get paid for the great things that they do on national TV. College players make more money for school playing their sport than people's salaries. Did you know that just if you make it to the NCAA BCS game, you get at least six million dollars. Sure student athletes get free things like free tuition, board, room fees, and food, but paying players would give them money for things like laundry, late night snacks, food for restaurants when on the road, and just different things.
