Why Was The Civil War Important

Although there have been many wars in history, the Civil War has been the most important one to the United States. The Civil War happened because of many reasons like when Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860 and became president, North and South’s cultural and economic differences and slavery became a moral issue in the North. The South was not happy about that, so they fired on Fort Sumter and won the Battle of Fort Sumter which was the first conflict of the Civil War. The Civil War occurred from April 12,1861 through May 9,1865. The Civil War had the two groups fighting;the Union which is the North and the Confederate which is the South. Two important facts about the Civil War are it was the war that people knew it wasn’t going to end
Gettysburg had many memorials of the battle and its impact to the war is it was the last battle that ended the bloodiest and deadliest war in U.S. history. The troops in the Union had 3 corps; the 1st corp was General James Longstreet,the 2nd corps was General R.S. Ewell and the 3rd corps was General A.P. Hill. The Confederates had seven corps and cavalry which is soldiers that fought on horseback.(2) The Officers in charge for Confederate is General Robert E. Lee and General George G. Meade for Union.(2) Some strategies the two sides had were for the Union, General R.S. Ewell threatened Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Baltimore. General James Longstreet attacked at 4pm by Cemetery Ridge but failed and made unsuccessful attacks. For the Confederates on June 30, they raided Gettysburg and spied on Union cavalry then brought back news to Cashtown. They then captured 5,000 Union soldiers and made damage on Union territory. On July 2, they began to canon at 1:00pm at Cemetery Ridge and thought they destroyed many Union guns. When General James Longstreet attacked at 4pm by Cemetery Ridge, they fired cannons at 6pm.(2) The winner of this battle was the Union. The
To sum up this battle, Abraham Lincoln is resupplying Fort Sumter which is located in Charleston,South Carolina which was the first state to secede from the Union. (3)There were Confederate troops in the South because they took over some Union territory. Jefferson Davis and other confederates came and aimed fire before the supplies arrived at Fort Sumter. It lasted 33 hours on April 12-14,1861. They sent a letter to the Union saying to surrender and they did. Confederates won the battle and it was the first conflict that started the Civil War. (3) Despite this argument, I stand firm that more important battle was the battle of Gettysburg because it was the last battle where General Robert E. Lee surrendered after Vicksburg and the Civil War was officially over when he signed the papers at the Appomattox
