The Importance of Handwriting
Handwriting is important for everyone to know how to complete regardless of their age or grade level. Throughout a child’s school years they will be required to write legible handwriting. When a student’s handwriting is illegible words might be mistaken for other words or misunderstood all together. (Ogle & Beers, 2009, chapter 9 para 1). When students are writing for others to see it is important that they are instructed to write legible, they need to be told that they are not just writing notes but something that is going to be viewed by more than just them. (Ogle & Beers, 2009, Chapter 9 para 2). Handwriting helps more than just the average student. Students that have disabilities, both physical and mental, will learn the same material as everyone else. These students might require a little bit of help such as a computer program in order to achieve this. ("5 Reasons Cursive Writing Should Be Taught In School", 2014, para 5).
I believe handwriting is important in all grades because students will use this skill for the rest of their lives. Handwriting becomes part of everyday life from the time you are taught it to the time you pass away. You will use handwriting to take notes, make grocery lists, do homework, take tests, and sign your autograph. Students will use handwriting in every subject in school. Everything from math to drawing to language arts will require the use of handwriting on a daily basis. (Spear-Swerling, 2010, para 4). In the primary grades handwriting is linked with basic reading skills as well as reading accomplishments. Once students learn their letters they can then learn the sound behind each letter. This helps them sound out each word in their handwriting, reading, and spelling skills. (Spear-Swerling, 2010, para 5).
After a lot of research on if handwriting should be taught in intermediate grades or not I believe that it should.
