Week 9: Reflection Assignment form
This class is about business communication and business writing. Skills I have learned in this class are going to be necessary in my classes I have coming up and my future career. With the communication technology skills I have learned in this class will be suitable to business write for my upcoming classes and my career.
Although communication technologies and devices are available, face-to-face communication in my opinion is the best way to communicate. In order to be effective in communication and business writing evaluating and learning about the audience is an important part of the business writing process. …show more content…
In order to receive positive feedback from an audience in business communication, whether it is e-mails, memos, and letters, the writing needs to be free from unbias, impartial, and indiscriminative writing. When it comes to a group setting I have learned it is important to adjust attitude, use active listening, interpersonal skills, be responsible, and dependable. When collaborating on a group writing project it is important to plan the entire project in order to produce a successful piece of writing. A rough draft will need to be produced, revised and edited by the entire group before presenting the writing to the audiences.
Week 4: Business Writing Graphic Organizer
**Keep in Mind**
Steps do not require a particular order. People write differently. I personally, start with body paragraphs and let my words and sentences flow. Then, I revise and edit. I add the introduction and conclusion paragraphs and proofread. In fact, most readers don’t use each step for all of the documents they write. It depends on how complex the given topic is.
Week 5: Email Etiquette
E-mail One
To: Tom
Subject line: Talent Reallocation
Tom,
This e-mail is in reference to the two employees who are going to be terminated Friday. We have determined that they are Nicole Stone and Lorenzo Torres. As we discussed yesterday, their performances are not on par with those of other employees in the accounting department; interventions with these employees have not been successful in helping them improve their performance. Let’s plan to meet with them individually in the conference room between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m.
Thanks,
Andrea
Responses to questions 1 and 2.
The formatting looks to be fine, but the topic line does not seem to fit.
The message is talking about two employees that are going to be terminated, and the subject line is talking about talent and reallocation.
This email is seems to be talking from one form of management to another form of management. It does not specify but in the nature of the e-mail this type of discussion usually is discussed between management. Addressing an employee by their first name would seem appropriate for the office if the two employees are management. The sections where the management will be meeting with employees individually also seem like a very good idea when addressing an employee’s performance.

Subject line: doc u wanted
Dear Manager,
Attached to this e-mail is the doc you wanted with the info on that lake project. I hope everything in it is str8 and the way U want it!!!!
BTW, did you see Last Comic Standing last night? I was totally ROFL at the bald dude!! :-}
B Cool,
Employee X
Responses to questions 1 and 2
I would like to start by saying this entire e-mails is incorrect. When addressing a manager on the “To” line I believe the manager should be addressed with a name and not just with a title. Next would be the subject line, the use of slang such as; “doc” in business writing is not appropriate. There should be a line break between the introduction” Dear Manager” and the body of the email.
This type of e-mail is not suitable for business. There is the use of slang and abbreviations such as; str8 instead of straight, and U instead of you, and BTW instead of By the way. I also did not see it as appropriate to incorporate the use of personal activities, and bias discussion about other people. These types of discussions take up company time and takes away from productivity. And last is the sign of, This could have much more professionalism.

Subject line: COURTESY
Dear Cubicle Neighbor,
I really do not appreciate it when you talk loudly on the phone. It is hard for me to think straight and get my work done. YOU ARE NOT MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYONE ELSE AROUND HERE!!!!! You should be more considerate of the fact that we are in an open workspace.
THANKS for what I assume will be an improvement that is NEEDED.

Responses to questions 1 and 2
Using all caps when composing an E-Mail shows signs of poor etiquette. When using capitals in every word in a sentence represents a person yelling at someone else. Using exclamation marks such as these represents a letter wrote in anger. This E-Mail should have been written with more dignity and respect so as not to offend someone and create friction in the workplace. This E-Mail should have had a space after the (Dear Cubical Neighbor)
This E-Mail is not suitable for the working environment, because the writing style is inappropriate in business E-Mails. The writher should have taken more time when writing the letter and found another way to write it without making it sound threatening.

Dear Cubical Neighbor, Lately I have noticed you have become a little overly excited when talking to your customers on the phone. If this helps you perform your job better and increase your sale more power to you, but lately you have been raising your voice a little too much and it has started affecting my work by interfering with my concentration when I am talking to my customers. With that said I respectfully request that you lower your voice a little when talking to your customers so it does not distract me or others when we are talking to our customers.
Your cooperation is appreciated with this small problem.

To: All company employees
Subject line: URGENT—Your reply needed TODAY
Employees,
About 25% of you have not let me know whether or not you plan to attend the company cookout Saturday. We have to provide the caterer with a final number TODAY, so I need those of you who have not let me know to e-mail me ASAP and tell me if you are coming and how many family members you are bringing. This is urgent, so please don’t delay in responding.
Thanks,
Carol
Director
Responses to questions 1 and 2
This e-mail appears to look and sound excellent except for not having an extra space after (Employees). It should also have the date of the cookout and the date the information is needed back. One other problem I have seen is capitalizing the word director is not required.
This email sound good for business writing even though it does have one word capitalized. I believe this is done simply to express the urgency of the e-mail. Other than the small mistakes this e-mail does not need to be re written.

Mr. Doe:
To begin with, I would like to personally thank you for all the hard work and time you have invested in our company. At this time, we would like to inform you of some upcoming changes to our store polices. The purpose of these policy changes is to save our employees time as well as ensure the survival of our company during this difficult economic situation.
Beginning in January, 20110, store hours will change and so will the scheduling of employees. From now on, the store will be opening one hour later and closing one hour earlier. The store will no longer be open on Sundays. Our full time employees can still expect 40 hours a week; however, their schedules will be affected. An extra day off can be expected as shifts will now generally be 10 hours instead of 8. Part time employees will also consolidate their hours. These employees should not expect to work more than 3 days a week.
Due to the tough economical times and the rising price of gasoline, these new hours will help employees to save time and money. I can assure you, however, that our stores will remain open and stable, despite the cutback in overall hours
Again, thank you for your dedication to our stores, much of our success can be attributed to you personally and your hard work. Please distribute this information to your employees and let them know that if they do have any questions, they should feel free to contact the company headquarters.
Thanks,
Adrienne Johnson

In today’s global economy, individuals of all ages are deciding to advance their knowledge by earning a degree in higher education. This opportunity has become a stronger possibility by providing individuals the opportunity to take courses online versus having to attend classes on site at a college campus.
