Management and Leadership Theories
With such a leading Manager as Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer, I believe the path-goal theory is just one possibility model that could be used to make managers effective leaders. Leadership researcher, Robert House, developed the path-goal theory of leadership. He focused on the way leaders should encourage and support their followers in attaining company goals.
The path-goal theory launches three corridors that leaders use;
1) Clear communication so an employee would know in which direction to head;
2) A way in which to reward employees appropriately for their performance; and
3) A way that the employee(s) could remove their obstacles by first identifying them to obtain their goals.
In the path-goal theory, there are four kinds of leadership styles identified that motivate employees:
1.) Supportive leadership; this kind of leadership focuses on building your employees’ self esteem.
2.) Directive leadership; which is telling cohorts what should be complete and giving appropriate guidance along the way.
3.) Participative leadership; Allowing the employee to be creatively involved in the decision making process. And this process affects everyone.
4.) Achievement-oriented leadership motivates employees by assessing each person’s abilities and uses it to get the best out of them.
When you look at such a large company like Yahoo and an effective leader like Marissa Mayer, how does a woman liker herself, and such an affective leader truly determine the appropriate leadership style to use? She must consider the personal characteristics of the employee or personal in which she is mentoring, such as the age, ability, and acceptance of authority or even their role in which they are working within the organization. Other factors should also be considered such as the nature of the task that is being asked of this employee. It is going to be an internal or external request. Promotional or demotion, or
