BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care
Unit 8 – Human Lifespan Development
Task 3 – P3, M2 and D1:
In this assignment I will produce a written report that clearly states the factors that influence an individual’s self concept, based on the case study provided. Also I will extend my report to outline how factors can influence the development of an individual’s self concept. I will also add a description on how factors can influence the development of an individual’s self concept.
P3:
Self Concept:
Self concept is a combination of how you see yourself and how you think others see you. It is sometimes described as self awareness. Self concept is usually thought of as being based on three things which are self image, ideal self and self esteem. * Self image is your idea of who you are. * Ideal self is who you would like to be. * Self esteem is how you like and value yourself.
The factors that influence on Najib’s self concept are:
Income:
Najib is short of money and would like a job so that he can afford to buy some smart new clothes. This shows that he is receiving low income which influence on his self concept and his self image due to his low income. As a mentor I will need to encourage him to visit a financial advisor to help his income. If he sees a financial advisor they will give him an advice on his income so that he can afford to buy his new clothes. Also he will need to visit a career advisor to help him to get a job which could help support his income. Other people will be affected in this way unless they have family support.
Education:
Najib’s attendance is poor. He often misses time due to tiredness or illness. This shows that his learning is being affected. His experience at school can certainly affect how he feels about himself. Educational achievements can increase his self esteem if he attends at school every day. As a mentor I will need to support his education and this will encourage him to attend at school

Explaining the meaning of self-esteem is not exactly an easy task. Different components have to be taken into consideration, such as psychological and sociological dimensions. Overall, it can be defined as one’s sense of competence and self-worth. Differentiation needs to be made between healthy and unhealthy self-esteem. Healthy self-esteem is earned through successes and overcoming trial while unhealthy self-esteem comes from success that is given and can easily turn into narcissism, which is known to be connected to violent behaviors and bullying.…
