Appendix D
Contingency Theory of Leadership
Description of work environment
The work environment that I choose, would be retail, because I see myself owning a boutique one day.
The duties of my employees will range from fashion consultants, designers, restocking inventory, customer service.
In the table below, categorize different leadership approaches that could be used in the work environment you have described. Provide different suggestions for each of the four approaches to leadership.
Directive approach
Supportive approach
For my directive approach, I would incorporate face-to-face meetings, hand out handbooks with the policies, the rules, etc. I will then, at the face-to face meetings make clear what is expected from them, and what their roles would be if hired. Of course, I would hire someone who knows the ropes of what I expect to work, to work closely with my apprentices and train them.
My supportive approach will consist of making my whole staff feel included in the business. The main motto foe my establishment will be that there is no “I” in team, and that it takes us as a whole to make the company rise to it’s full potential. Everyone will be treated as equal in the company, unless their performance shows signs of slacking or otherwise.
Participative approach
Achievement-oriented approach
In this approach, I will continue the steps from the directive approach, only with more personal details, such as getting to know my employees, and having more personal one on one time with my potential employees and asking them for their input that can help improve the vision of the company.
In this approach, my employees will have exercises and tests based on meetings, and there will be rewards for achievements that are being made, such as an outstanding employee who has been on top of their inventory for example. Setting goals for my employees to accomplish in a set amount of time.
