GMO Essay According to a poll by CNBC on March 3rd, 2011, ninety-six percent of Americans believe that GMOs should be labeled. That is a huge percentage of people on this side of the question, “Do you think the FDA should require companies to label food that comes from genetically modified plants (GMOs) for consumers?” I agree with the ninety-six percent of Americans. The FDA should label products if they have GMOs in them for three main reasons: health hazards, ethical issues and religious concerns. Those are the main points to support my opinion of this issue. Have you ever wondered what would happen if genes from two different food plants were combined? Scientists inquired about this and that is how genetic engineering started. According to www.ucsusa.org, “Genetic engineering refers to a set of technologies that are being used to change the genetic makeup of cells and move genes across species boundaries to produce novel organisms.” In other words, genetic engineering is modifying the genetic make-up of an organism to make new organisms that are considered better and more efficient. These organisms are called GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). Dog breeders use this concept along with biotechnology, the application of a technological process, invention, or method to living organisms, when breeding their dogs. One part of biotechnology is selective breeding. This is taking the advantage of naturally occurring genetic variation to pass wanted traits onto the next generation of organisms. If you had a dog with smooth hair and a different dog with short hair, a dog from the next generation would most likely have smooth, short hair. Recombinant DNA is also another part of biotechnology. It’s basically combining the DNA of two different organisms to change the genetic composition. GM (geteically-modified) corn is made from this. The FDA stands for the Food and Drug Administration.
