listening effectively
Some barriers that prevent us from listening effectively are trying to listen to more than one conversation at a time. You are not interested. Not focusing on the conversation. Sympathizing rather than empathizing. To over come these barriers would be instead of trying to listen to more than one conversation at a time try to focus on one conversation first then focus on the second conversation after the first one is finished. And try to have conversations in a least distracting environment. With not being interested sometimes its hard to be into the conversation or topic at hand. Sometimes we do get bored. I think trying to possibly find something that can “catch” your interest within the topic at hand. There might be something said that grabs your attention. With empathize you have to place yourself into the other persons “shoes”. I think most people usually try to find someone who will place themselves in their position to better understand. At the same time I think you can feel sorry for the person and what they're going through but also have

Active Listening Skills is the first article I read. This article was very helpful since it provided me with information on how to help clients improve the quality of their life. It is crucial for a client to know that the interviewer is really listening because the client will open up faster since the client will feel appreciated and respected. The article explains how important it is to listen in order to catch the client’s attention and for the client to respond positively and rapidly and on a deeper level. I learned by reading the article that there are different ways of listening. I have learned that the interviewer should have active participation which means facing the client at all times and maintaining eye contact during the interview/session, to always focus on what the client is saying, and for the interviewer to respond properly showing interest on what the client said.…

Hello, Jasman. Great initial post and I enjoyed reading it. Active listening is one of the most important aspects of communication. Listening makes our patients feel that their voice and concerns are heard. It is important to put ourselves in the person’s shoes. Writing skills is also essential in nursing. Nursing documentation provides a means of communication between members of the health team involved in the care of the patient. In nursing, concise, clear, and accurate documentation could protect us from many legal cases and in providing continuity of care. Thank you. Have a good day.…

Listening is the way we hear someone or something. Effective listening requires us to hear more of what someone is saying instead of just hearing what they are saying. When we are listening effectively, it means we are not letting anything distract us from paying attention to what the person is saying and understanding them verbally and nonverbally. Speaking in a way that one understands and making sure we are listening affectively will help the worker to better understand and able to help the client when needed.…

“Active Listening Skills” was the first article I found interesting. The article delivered a lot of very useful information that will help with assisting clients and develop a strong relationship. It is important that the client knows the person listening is paying attention and cares about what is being said. The article shows how important listening is and how to get the client to respond and freely and open up about very personal topics. As a professional, we must contribute to the conversation by facing the client, keeping eye contact, listening actively, and respond suitably. This article says we should use reflective listening, this will help get the client to respond more in depth.…

Interpersonal skills of listening, questioning and feedback are crucial when working as a child safety officer as they allow the officer to clarify, gain knowledge and understand. Active listening allows the child safety officer to clarify the child’s needs with empathy; doing this builds a trusting relationship. I do not feel a therapist’s job is to give advice. Telling a client what to do or how to feel is depriving them of the opportunity to learn their own way of coping and the feeling of accomplishment of figuring things out on their own. In addition, my position as a counselor is to practice active listening, to be supportive and empathic so the client can empower him or herself. Consequently, in allowing the client to think for him or herself and freely communicate in a safe environment, the client may discover emotions, feelings and thought processes that the counselor has no way of knowing. That being said, there may be times in which concrete suggestions or considerations may be discussed and examined between the client and counselor.…

Throughout engaging in empathetic listening the listener lets the speaker know, “I understand your problem and how you feel about it and I am interested in what you are saying, without judging you.” These feelings are conveyed by the listener through non-verbal cues and body language. Eye contact and not interrupting are very important in letting the speaker feel safe and understood. Paraphrasing is also an effective way to have them feel able to release their emotions and dive deeper into the problem, because it shows you understand what they are going through and builds rapport and trust in the relationship. Richard Salem (2003), “The use of empathy and listening skills, empathic listening, usually leads to great, long lasting relationships, emotional…

Relational, analytical, critical, and task are the four listening styles that people resort to when they are actively listening. Most people resort to only one style at a time but some may resort to many different listening styles at once. Certain jobs such as social worker, teachers, people in the medical fields, and police officers must be able to use all the listening skills depending on the situation they are in at that moment. The reason for this is because they deal with multiple personalities and ways of communication. I do believe that I resort to multiple listening skills.…

I choose to talk about my Math class, which is MATH 165 with Prof. Edgar. This class is Calculus I. We are learning to understand the “instantaneous” change, by which we mean changes over tiny intervals of time. First, when I saw the class’s description I guessed that it would be a really interesting class. But this one is sort of boring because of the professor and some students.…

“Seek first to understand, then be understood” (Covey 2004). Those are wise words by Stephen Covey. Mr.Covey is referring to empathic listening. “When I say empathic listening I am not referring to the techniques of active listening or reflective listening. When I say empathic listening, I mean listening with intent to understand. I mean seeking first to understand, to really understand” (Covey 2004). It is important to note that empathy is not sympathy. The difference is that sympathy is a form of agreement, a form of judgement. And it is sometimes more appropriate emotion and response. The essence of empathic listening is not that you agree with someone; it’s that you fully deeply, understand that person emotionally as well as intellectually.…

I agree with you that engaged listening is a necessary skill to facilitate cultural competence. It also shows genuine care and interest. Being aware of how listening looks to people of other cultures is important. For instance leaning forward and eye contact may show one culture that you are listening, whereas leaning in and turning an ear to someone of another culture shows that person that you are listening (Giger, 2013). Being respectful to cultural differences will help build a therapeutic relationship. I believe that developing good communication skills should be a priority for healthcare providers to build therapeutic relationships with culturally diverse patients. Do you agree?…

Being an empathetic listener is important in both personal and professional relationships, not only because of the relational consequences that you may suffer from not showing empathy but also because people are valuable and simply need to be treated as important. Sometimes people are just too busy to demonstrate empathetic listening, or perhaps one has simply never considered what it means to be a good listener. Either way, the consequences of not being an empathetic listener can be devastating. Personal relationships can suffer or ultimately end. Professional relationships can suffer causing distrust, decreased productivity, and poor…

Picture someone reflecting on what they have done in the past twenty-four hours. Predict how many times they dropped everything they were doing and truly listened to a friend, family member, or coworker. Does this sound too good to be true? This might be because it very well could be too good to be true because, unfortunately, active listening seems to be fading away as time goes by. Furthermore, consider how the meaning of favorite songs becomes so clear when in attendance of a live concert with seemingly nothing between the audience -desperately clinging to every precious word- and the performer. In this sense, listening can make one feel understood, inspired, and elevated because without the distractions of everyday life, new epiphanies…

The first role play in class went much better than I expected. I was extremely anxious going into the role play, not because public speaking scares me but, because I was nervous to share my stories with so many people. However, my partner, Taylor, when I was the speaker made me very comfortable. When it was my turn to be listener, I was still anxious but more prepared. I listened to Bella’s story about her conflict with her mom on why she changed majors. While listening to Bella, I had the chance to use my active listening skills. In the role play, I had both areas of strength and areas for growth.…

In this week I learned new knowledge about habits of mind, cognitive coaching, and characteristic of good coach and mentor. First I will focus on the main point of what I learned. Listening and its role in the success of understanding and dialogue, When we talk we would love others to listen to us. Perhaps this general nature in all of us. Hearing make you trust, respect and feel of your importance. The social psychologists have shown that listening well to others is not necessarily to end the full impact on them, but it increases the bonds of love, spiritual closeness, and emotional bond between people. This is the most striking features of the good coach and powerful influence in the communities is to listen and listen to what other people…
