Culture affects our understanding of biographical characteristics and intellectual abilities

BIOGRAPHICAL CHARACTERISTICS
• Biography: A biography (from the Greek words bios meaning "life", and graphos meaning
"write") is an account of a person's life.
• Biographical characteristics represent many of the SURFACE-LEVEL aspects of diversity that are very easy to identify.
• Personal Characteristics – such as age, gender, race and tenure – that are objective and easily obtained from personal records.

AGE
Older workers bring experience, judgment, a strong work ethic, and commitment to quality.

AGE
1. Effect of age on turnover
 the older we get the less likely we will quit because the are limited job opportunities and we are also sitting on higher benefits.

2. Effect of age on absenteeism
 older employees, lower rates on unavoidable absence

AGE
3. Effect of age on productivity
 most of us belief that job performance declines with age.

4. Effect of age on satisfaction
 tends to increase amongst professionals.
 tends to decrease amongst nonprofessionals during middle age and rises in later years.

GENDER
Fewer differences between men and women that affect job performance.

1. Women are more willing to conform with authority.

2. Men are more aggressive and more likely to have expectations of success.
3. Women with pre-school children prefer part-time work, flexible work schedules, and telecommuting to accommodate family responsibilities.

5. Absenteeism – no significant differences.

People in the workplace do identify more with people like themselves so in some cases
