1 Description
The purpose of this course is to help students understand the complexities of organizations. It is designed to provide an exposure to theories of organization, important organizational issues and processes, and a variety of strategies and tactics useful to successful organizational leaders and followers alike.

2 Prior knowledge and link to other modules
This course will be followed by Perspectives on Organizations II.

3 Learning outcomes
This course will develop four major views of organizations (frames) that comprehend much of the existing theory and research on organizations.

1) A structural frame, which emphasizes goals, roles, formal relationships, and the rational side of organization.
2) A human resource frame, which focuses on human needs, attitudes, and skills and emphasizes the human side of organization.
3) A symbolic frame, which explores how organizations create meaning and belief through symbols, including myths, rituals, and ceremonies.
4) A political frame, which examines power, conflict, and coalitions among those who have vested interests to protect and want to advance within a context of scarce resources.

The course will begin by viewing organizations through each of the four frames separately. In the long run, the learning outcome is:
1. to explain the concept of reframing;
2. to be able to describe all four frames (Structural, Human Resource, Political and Symbolic Frame);
3. have the ability to recognize organizations/ situations simultaneously as machines, families, theaters, and jungles;
4. to have a generalized understanding of the complexities of organizations.

Course Requirements:
1. Readings are required for most classes. Required readings are found in the book and are to be prepared for the class on the date listed.

    Consider an organization of interest to you. This might be a church, a club, a service organization, a sports organization, a company that you would like to work for, or simply an organization that you admire or want to understand better. This should not be a company with whom you are currently employed. It would be helpful if the organization you choose has a website that describes the organization and products in some detail. Having a personal contact in this organization would be useful but is not essential. Some other assignments in this course will involve consideration of this organization.…
