In the book “Bread Givers” by Anzia Yezierska a young girl from poland grows up in america. Set in the 1920s conditions for immigrants living in the United States were tough, not to mention living in the lower East side of Manhattan, New York. Reb Smolinsky the father of Sara in this book really tries on impressing his beliefs onto his children for he is very set on his traditional ways. This becomes a very prominent underlying to the story as Sara grows throughout the book moving from her fathers beliefs to her own. This clash between the “old way” of doing things and her new american life style Sara breaks free from this conflict in finding her own identity in this new world. By doing so Sara really connect and Identifies with three main factors in her life independence, education and hard work. With these three basic elements in Sara’s life she really transitions into her own being and self identity.…
In the short story "Sixty-Nine Cents" Gary Shteyngart, a Jewish writer who was born in Soviet Russia and emigrated to the USA at the age of seven, depicts one of his first experiences of attempted assimilation in the American society. This short autobiographic story shows the dubious nature of any immigrant's life, where not even an ethnic identity but the internal feeling of belonging to a certain culture creates obstacles to quick assimilation and makes a person to feel an outsider.…
In fact, most of the problems and situations that Reb Smolinsky was entangled in were financial based. It was his family’s financial situation and his unwillingness for people to see him as a poor man, that caused this supposed man of God Reb Smolinsky, the same man who saw his poverty as a blessing from God, to deny Fania his third daughter a chance to get married to the man of her choice with his reason for doing so being that Lipkin Morris, her lover “[did not] have the money to get a decent haircut [and had] starvation [crying] from his face” (pg. 75). The fact that he supported his own poverty on the account of being a rabbi but criticized others in poverty reveals his indolence as he had a chance make a living in America. And since the novel is an accurate historical account of the 1920’s, it would not be inaccurate to conclude that Americans, most but not all, were like during this…

The American Dream is a national ethos of the united states in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success. In the definition of the American dream by james truslow adams in 1931. “life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement” regardless of social class or circumstances of birth. The idea of the American dream is rooted in the United States declaration of independence which proclaims that all men are created equal and that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights including life liberty and the pursuit of happiness…
I thought the poem “Our Generation” By Jordan Nichols, was very unique. It showed that people can have two perspectives on the world, a positive or a negative. This poem is different because of the way you can read it from top to bottom, and bottom to top. Both ways showed that you can view the world in two different ways. The first time read it, it was very negative with lines saying “our generation was a failure” and “our generation will be known for nothing”. The second time, It was very positive with lines saying “giving up is something we never did” and “we are the peak of mankind”. Overall this poem shows that this generation can be changed if the world is viewed more positively.…
Richard Wright was determined to make a profound statement. In his novel, Native Son, he endeavors to present the “horror of Negro life in the United States” (Wright xxxiii). By addressing such a significant topic, he sought to write a book that “no one would weep over; that would be so hard and deep that they would have to face it without the consolation of tears” (xxvii). Native Son is a commentary on the poverty and helplessness experienced by blacks in America, and it illustrates the abhorrent ways that blacks were treated, describes their awful living conditions and calls attention to the half-hearted efforts offered by white sympathizers. Told from the perspective of his character Bigger Thomas, Wright crafts a story depicting the oppressive lives endured by Negroes and makes it so despicable that it grabs the attention of the reader and forces him to reevaluate the state of society. There is much in this novel that would cause a reader to cry, but, to Wright’s point, the topic is so significant that it resonates more deeply and elicits a deeper response.…

When to date the start of the history of the United States is debated among historians. Older textbooks start with thearrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492 and emphasize the European background, or they start in 1600 and emphasize the American frontier. In recent decades American schools and universities typically have shifted back in time to include more on the colonial period and much more on the prehistory of the Native peoples.[1][2]…
