Teaching in a Diverse Classroom
As a teacher teaching in such a diverse school district, I would be sensitive to my students’ cultural, academic and economic differences. In my classroom I strive to create culturally sensitive learning communities and develop a positive teacher-student-parent relationship. Lesson plans are designed to motivate all students to learn, at their own level of learning, and allow me to use differentiated instructional strategies with hope of maximizing student learning. I would hope that after taking my course my students would be able to see the importance of being a productive citizen and how they can use the tools and skills learned to reach that goal. I do believe that with the right tools and skills, they all can be productive citizens whether they choose to take a job right out of high school, attend college or learn a trade at a career technical school.

One of the most challenging situations that I have had to handle with another adult occurred my first year of teaching. Our local DECA chapter was wrapping up a fundraiser and needed to get rid of our leftover stock of suckers. Several of my students asked if they could come back later in the day and sell. I told them that they had to complete their classroom work and get permission from their teacher to come back and sell at the end of the block period. So after a successful day, I was approached during my 4th block planning period by a teacher. She came into my classroom, without knocking, waving the note I had written, and pretty much told me to never request for “her” students to be removed from class again. I was taken by surprise; she didn’t even introduce herself when she came into my classroom. I only knew who she was from the faculty meetings. So in order to save face, I took the high road and I apologized and told her it would never happen again. How could I have handled it differently?     I approached the teacher before their next lesson and explained how the children took time to process instructions and that if they were laughing and joking about it would take afew minutes to calm down and get focused on what was required next. The teacher glared at me and then very sharply told me not to tell her how to do her job. I was mortified .I explained i was just trying to point out how they reacted and felt when she shouted at them for not instantly stopping and getting on with the next task.     Equality is ensuring individuals or groups of individuals are treated fairly and equally and no less favourably than others. Equality is about the rights of the learners to attend and participate regardless of age, sex, race, gender reassignment, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation, marriage/civil partnership and pregnancy /maternity. Diversity is about recognising and being tolerant of different views which individual people have, in terms of cultural backgrounds and different lifestyle choices relating to any characteristics they may have. A diverse society is what we have as every individual has a different culture, belief and life experience to the next. Inclusion is about including all the learners in ‘relevant activities rather than excluding them for any reason either directly or indirectly’ (Gravells 2008). ‘Every learner has the right to expect that they will receive high quality learning appropriate to their needs and circumstances ion a safe and healthy environment.’ (Success for all: DfES 2002). Inclusive teaching and learning is possible when promoted. In order to achieve this I combine both the training cycle and the learning styles from Kolb and Fry. These include using Concrete experience, Abstract Conceptualisation, Active Experimentation and Observation and Reflection. Learners the mixing up of which produces the learning styles that best suits a learner, ie; Converger, Diverger, Assimilator and Accommodator. By ensuring the lessons accommodate all learning styles all learners will feel inclusion. Along with the learning styles I would include relevant resource materials .     I have grown up with Education being my catapult through life; I love it. I love to study children and figure out how they learn and how our educational experiences shape us as adults. Five years ago, I found myself accepting a position as a Toddler teacher in a government facility. To describe it simply, I was a fish out of water.
