Practicing and learning your piece is what helps make the piece great. The only advice I have for you here is practice, practice, practice. It is preferred that you play your piece memorized, this means that you have to know your music by heart. There is a lot to learn in a piece and it is important that you learn it all, or to the best of your ability. One of the most important things is to start playing your piece in front of other people. Part of what makes the 4-H music contest so helpful is that it helps you build your confidence to play in front of people. Ask a friend, family member, or neighbor to listen to your piece. It will help calm your nerves when the big date comes, as you will already have played in front of others. This type of practice will make you appear calmer and ready to play your piece in the contest. Start out with small groups of people listening and slowly get more and more to come and listen if you can. Still, think your contest ready? Think again, before you get to contest it is important to be prepared. While this is possibly the simplest step it is still important. Before you get to contest, make sure you know all of the rules, fill out all of the forms, and have a copy of the music to give to your judge. Depending on your contest rules you may have numbered your measures or time yourself playing it.
