A Charge To Keep I Have Analysis
Verline Mendez
Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve In John Wesley hymn story “A Charge to Keep I Have” there is a section that exemplifies how being involved in the Trio program has helped me to find my purpose. “ A charge to keep I have, A God to glorify, a never-dying soul to have and fit for the sky, to serve the present age, my calling to serve.” Growing up in a single parent home and being the youngest of eight children was challenging. We lived in a shackle blue house where my mother was transient. She juggled three jobs and worked extremely hard to provide for my siblings and I. We were poor, but we had each other. I, however, never let my financial state hinder me from great achievement. I learned work ethic early from my mother. She instilled in me that hard work and dedication are a necessity to achieve my goals. My parents immigrated from Haiti and the Dominican Republic to the United States so that their children could have a better life and receive an education. Being the youngest of eight children and the second person in my

My first volunteering efforts began in high school at the YMCA, starting as an attendee, to volunteer, and now as a camp counselor. I was so excited to take on a leadership role because it was important for me to be a positive role model for the current students just as my mentors once did for me. When I entered college I immediately enrolled in Trio Student Support Services because of the amazing experience I had in the upward bound program in high school. Trio Student Support Services are a second family. The faculty has helped nurture and cultivate me into becoming a scholar and an intellectual by providing me with tutoring opportunities and countless seminars. These resource has been the primary reason I have been able to excel at Hampton University thus far. I have been on the Dean’s list every semester since I first

During the course of my high school career, I have developed a strong passion for the organization named the Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). FCCLA is a Career and Technical Student Organization that focuses on building students into better leaders for their families, careers, and communities. Furthermore, FCCLA teaches students practical skills that will be useful throughout their lifetimes. This organization has become an important part of my life because it has shaped me into the leader I am today. I began in the organization as a member and participant in competitive events, I have now worked my way up to being my chapter’s President and the Missouri State First Vice President. My leadership experience in FCCLA, especially my experience as a member of the Missouri State…

During high school, I committed most of my free time to my NJROTC unit and my 4-H club. In both of these organizations, community service, leadership, citizenship, and initiative are indispensable values that are essential to their functioning, and I like to think I have learned to embody these traits. In 4-H, I have attended, and then went on to teach, numerous leadership and group trainings. In NJROTC, I attended the Area 5 Leadership Academy, graduated as the Second Honor Cadet of the 2014 Academy, and was selected to be an Aide for the 2015 Academy. I held, or currently hold, leadership positions in both organizations and I feel I set a good example for my peers and subordinates. Through any task, I am enthusiastic about my job and…

Throughout my high school experience, the one memory I remember the most that helped me the most would have to be the time I interned at a local non-profit, Lettuce Live Well. I decided that I needed to encounter more challenges in my life; as if my life wasn’t challenging enough. I decided to work with a non-profit because I knew I would get all the experience I can get while getting to work head on with the local community; this was what made it all worth it. The one place that I found I can get the most experience while still connecting with the local community was an organization call Lettuce Live Well.…

Along with many other achievements in the last three years, my involvement in National Honors Society is one of the most significant. In the past two years I have been a part of National Honors Society at my high school. The four pillars of NHS include: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. I believe I am a leading exemplar of those standards. Scholarship entails more than just getting good grades. It is achieving recognizable grades in rigorous courses that challenge you to learn outside of your comfort zone. National Honors Society has encouraged me to make an impact on my community. Community service is not an obligation, it is a choice I make because it is selfless and rewarding in ways far beyond words. Volunteering is doing…

Yet, the various organizations at Austin College sparked my interest, and slowly but surely I began to get involved. Although I have been overwhelmed at times, I quickly learned that being involved in the Sherman community and Austin College’s organizations have become a vital part of my college experience. My experience in these short 7 months have taught me the value of service and being involved. When I performed service events in the past, it was to gain service hours and build up a résumé. Now I serve because helping others give me a genuinely great feeling. My involvement in organizations has helped me to develop character traits such as, integrity, leadership, and service, and other traits that simply cannot be taught in a classroom. I know that these everlasting seeds of integrity, service, and leadership will continue to flourish well beyond college.…

This past summer I was part of the leadership staff at Camp Howard. I was a unit director for the 1st and 2nd graders who came to camp for the day. This unit consisted of 30 campers and 4 counselors whom I was in charge of. I am also the treasurer of the College of Democrats and I volunteer with multiple organizations. For example, I help students and community members register to vote and I work closely with the office of Lane County of Democrats. I volunteer with the National Society of Collegiate Scholars by holding toy drives for homeless shelters. Another service experience I've had is volunteering with the Sparrow Club in my hometown. There is not a single feeling greater than the one you experience when you make a positive impact on someone else’s life. Thankfully, I was able to experience that in my junior year. My high school has a program called Link Crew that is designed to help alleviate the anxiety of freshmen’s transition in to high school. When I signed up to get involved, I never realized how strongly it would affect not only my life, but also the life of everyone else who came in contact with it one way or another. Junior year was my first year involved in the program. At first, I was not sure if I would be able to handle it because it was a club that required a large time commitment. I was already involved in my advisory board, student council, and also I had been on the varsity softball team for both years prior to my junior year, along with working anywhere from three to five days a week. It was a very busy time in my life for a while, but I soon came to realize that Link Crew was completely worth it once I started seeing the effect it had on my school.…

All throughout school I have participated in many clubs and organizations that have not only molded me as a person, but have helped me to develop responsibility, and leadership skills. Currently I am an active member of National Honor Society, and DECA. Both of these organizations, provided by my high school, encourage leadership, volunteer work, and have high expectations for behavior, and grades. Being in National Honor Society has shown me to continually do for others in need. There are always opportunities to get involved with the community, and even create drives for things like stuffed animals, and blankets for children who are sick in the hospital, and “Care Catties” for cancer patients, which include tissues, water bottles, hard candy, and lotion. DECA is another organization I am involved in at Frenship High School. DECA is a business organization for high school marketing students looking to learn, develop and compete in a competitive event. I have been a member since my sophomore…

Spelman College’s motto, A Choice to Change the World, mirrors my goal as a member of this intellectual community. During my first year at this institution, I dedicated myself to several hours of community service. I found that this was a vital part of my intellectual growth as both a student and person within society. This year I volunteered for several nonprofit organizations, however I dedicated most of my time to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Before volunteering for this organization I was not quite sure how I would be able to make a significant difference in my community. However, when I volunteered for this organization, I was able to tremendously help people in Atlanta. Likewise, this experience opened my eyes to the increasing…

My experiences serving others have exposed me to the issues my community faces and have shown me that I can make a difference. My first experience working with underserved populations in my community was serving food at Union Station Homeless Services’ Thanksgiving Dinner in the Park in high school. This made me step out of my comfort zone and interact with a group I was unfamiliar with. Through serving food and interacting with homeless and low-income families, I saw that my small actions could brighten one’s day. This inspired me to start Heal L.A. at UCLA with some of my classmates. We wanted to help the significant homeless population surrounding our campus in any way possible. What started as buying meals and conversing with them has grown…
