He looked up seeing the silhouette of the town’s buildings in front of him, darkly contrasting the setting
sun slowly fading into the ground. While not the largest settlement out there, for a supposed town it was surprisingly big, almost bordering on a city, with an imposing wall around it. He heard the creaking sound of the gate shutting, however he did not hurry to make it in, nor slow to make camp overnight.
As he approached the range at which the torches of the wall would reach in the now dark surroundings, he suddenly disappeared into the shadows.
. . .
“Why did you leave the window to my office open you daft bastard.” Raged the captain of a unit assigned to patrol the wall.
“I swear when I cleaned up I closed it, like always, someone must have opened it.” Replied back a young looking man dressed a ragged guard uniform.
“How on earth would someone else have opened it, you’re the only one who has been in here and unless someone climbed up ten meters of vertical wall and unlocked a military grade magic lock then it was you. Do you think someone has done that you blithering idiot?”
“No sir, sorry sir.”
“Fuck, now it will be freezing all night, send me that girl you always hire and if anyone asks why I’ve taken her then I’m sure you’ll give the truth”
Needless to say, in the morning the guard had a few more bruises than he had before, contrasting to the captain who looked uncharacteristically relaxed.
