Active Shooter

Today, the world is much different than it use to be. Times and people both have rapidly changed. I believe that after all that has been happening and with the attitudes of outraged people that we should pay more attention to our safety and the safety of the people around us. Especially in schools, at public events, and in work places. I believe topics like shootings are topics that we should take seriously. Being in college puts you around so many new people. You have no idea who you can trust as you are adapting to the campus life. Meeting new people can be great, but we have to think about the kind of people we put ourselves around.
In the Active shooter presentation, we went over what reality would be like if we had to encounter a shooter at our school. The officer showed live clips, had a power point presentation, and talked about how to deal with the situation. This set students into the realization that a shooting could happen anywhere, at anytime. It’s a matter that should be taken serious. This subject is something that most people tend to overlook. In the presentation, the live reenactment videos really showed us how easy it is for a shooter to get in, and how hard it is for the victim to get out. In the presentation I liked the organization. He related to the students well, and gave very informative perspectives. I think that the videos were helpful, because they gave us an actual visual of what a shooting could look like and how to prepare for this kind of thing. I did not enjoy the overall subject as much, because it is something that is very serious that most people would rather look over. The other thing I disliked were the people who didn’t take the presentation serious. It might not have been the best way to spend your afternoon, but this is a subject that needs to be addressed within our school. In the long run, I know that it is information that will help us, or someone we love. Overall, I liked the presentation and how

On February 14, 2008, at 3:06 p.m., a tall thin man named Steven Kazmierczak kicked open a door to a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University where he shot dead 5 people. When he found his was in the lecture hall he walked on to the stage and bore several guns. The 150 students that were sitting in the lecture hall assumed it was all a joke until he shot dead the professor. Several student hurled themselves to the floor between the chairs while others just shrieked. Kazmierczak took aim at those very urged students. He was just stepping up the aisles shooting with no hesitation at the people who he noticed to be in an urge to leave. Then, two bands of police officers arrived announcing the school students to stay in a safe area away from…

There were prominent warning signs even according to the shooter’s poetry professor Nikki Giovanni that caused her and her students fear to be around Cho (Roberts). When the first shooting occured campus authoritys gave no more thought into it other than it being a small domestic incident, leaving them to believe the gunman had left campus. A student Brant Martel felt that, “they were a little slow on their response.” (Questions…). Even a day after the shooting people like Kenneth Trump of National School and Safety Services acknowledge that there needed to be a plan implimented to deal with crisis situations like this one (Questions…). Students were disappointed of the lack of attention to the first shooting and the emails that were sent 2 hours later during the rest of the shootings (NBC). Since the shootings that happened in 2007, about two thirds of four year colleges with 2500 students have been supplied with dedicated police officers and security guards according to the Departmant of Justice (Rich). The Virginia Tech campus shootings changed the landscape of security on school campuses by forcing campuses to implement active shooter drills. text alerts for students,…

With all the college shootings, all the students that I had interviewed felt that they would be significantly safer if they had the ability to protect themselves if this horrible event were to ever take place on their own campus. Aaron felt that knowing you have the ability to protect yourself in this event is reassuring. Though most of the interviewees have campus police, a lot of them feel that sometimes calling for help won't make it in time to save their lives. No one should have the fear of not having the ability to defend him or her, especially in a life or death situation. Taylor Winand had the best response when it came to this situation. “If an active shooter was in the same room you were, calling the campus police would be like bring a knife to a gun fight.” There is so much information gathered from these interviews, it was…

The documentary “Bowling for Columbine” is an award-winning documentary directed by well-known filmmaker Michael Moore. The film won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, as well as an Independent Spirit Award, a Cesar Award and many others. This bold movie criticizes America’s large number of gun related deaths annually compared to other countries around the world. He discusses why America seems to have such a problem with violence and how it has led to tragedy’s involving firearms like the imfamous shooting at Columbine high school in Columbine, Colorado. Since the Columbine shooting in 1999 there have been other school shootings that seem to closely resemble it, such as the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting and the recent 2012 Sandy Hook…

My name is Andy Struttmann I am currently a junior in high school. I am writing to you to voice my concern about the recent tragic events involving gun violence. First off I want to voice that I am an avid gun user and value my rights as every American citizen should, but I ask when should the line be drawn for what guns should be available and who should be able to purchase and use them. Even though the number of murders per year has been annually decreasing I still believe that some new gun laws need to be put into place. That would include more detailed background checks for people who want to purchase and use weapons. Also it should be illegal for a college student to be allowed to carry a firearm on campus even if it is conceal and carry. Letting guns be on campus is just an all around bad idea. There have been tragic events in the past involving students and firearms on college campuses and I personally would not like to see another shooting at a campus just because a student was allowed to keep a firearm with them. It says in the article written by Darby Dickerson in 2011 that “students should not be allowed to carry guns on college campuses” after reading the article I fully agree with Mr. Dickerson. I also read the CNN article called “How the NRA wields its influence” the article stated that there will be absolutely no new gun laws, which in my mind should not be the case. Maybe if there were more gun laws and better background checks many of the tragedies that have happened in the recent past including the horrific tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School late last year would not have happened. I am not saying that new laws will completely erase gun violence from our great country, but maybe it will help. I know that new laws will not stop “crazy individuals” from buying firearms somehow I just think it should be much harder to obtain them. Like I…

I will be talking about the violence and murders in my community. In today’s world we live around it. It may not be at my front door but it affects me and my community in some type of way. When you are scared to go shopping at a certain time of the night or stop at a store to get gas. That is when you know it is serious. A lot of people are killing each other, robbing each other etc. they would rather rob, or kill someone for it and spend the rest of their life in jail paying for it. “Gun related violence is most common in poor urban areas and frequently associated with gang violence, often involving male juveniles or young adult males.” Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia…

The campus police will no longer be able to tell who is dangerous. Even though students and faculty will have a background check, it does not guarantee the mental state of each individual. Police officers will not know if an individual in possession of a handgun will snap. As a result, this could cause even more violence within the college campuses. According to Campus law enforcement officials, they are “particularly troubled about our ability of our officers to differentiate between bad actor and persons seeking to defend themselves and others when both have guns drawn” (Barnett). There is no reason to put our law enforcement officers in a situation where they cannot tell who is simply trying to defend and the one who is actually attacking. The confusion of police officers will only add to fatality in campus…

The Department of Justice conducted a study and “found that 93% of violent crimes that victimize college students occur off campus” ("College Campuses Are Safer Without Concealed Weapons"). This research shows, conclusively, that college students on campuses are significantly safer than off-campuses. It is because of strict policies that have kept firearms off our nation's campuses that made colleges and universities a safe domain. The United States of America found out that “there were 11,920 total gun homicides in the United States, but only 10 total murders on the nation's college campuses [in 2013]” ("College Campuses Are Safer Without Concealed Weapons"). College campuses prohibit concealed weapons, while outside of the campuses, concealed weapons are allowed. More crimes are committed when places allow concealed weapons, as you can see from the quote. If campuses were to allow concealed weapons, then violent crimes will, and shall, occur more…

That in it of itself is an eye opener to those for gun on college campuses. College campuses are a safe heaven, where students can be at ease, and be at peace knowing that they are protected 24/7. Lawmakers should take joy as well. Campus police is actually doing what’s asked of them and doing it above and beyond. Police are doing what is asked of them. Now imagine if a student or even faculty member such as a teacher with no crisis training is asked to respond to an emergency situation? Many if not most would panic and not how to respond to the situation at hand. Situations could lead to disaster, so why not leave that to the…

Alot of college student do stupid things as a result of what others are doing. do you really think adding guns to that would be a good idea. Dickerson believes that even though students may be mature enough to have a gun, their brains are still developing during this time. Many studies of brain development show that college students seek riskier behavior and also do not consider their consequences very well (Dickerson). Increasing the chance of risk and poor decisions by adding guns would not help out the students or the college out very well. Burnett believes that college students should be able to have a gun on campus for the reason that they should have the right to defend themselves. Burnett argues that student are holding protest to try and get some protection for themselves through concealed carry. The idea of having classes or activities that show students how to have their gun safe and secure is also brought up in order to try and help with getting them protection (Burnett). On the other hand, the students do need to have more protection than just signs that won’t stop anyone from bringing a gun and inflicting violence anyway.…

    Gun Free Zones

Of those 160, 39 have been at places of education with 12 on college campuses. Other places include mostly gun free zones such as places of business, government and health facilities. Most recently Umpqua Community College was devastated by a shooter who opened fire on their campus. Despite the campus being a gun free zone ten lives were lost due to gun violence(3). We might ask ourselves why this tragedy took place. Why did our laws not prevent the shooter from hurting innocent people? It is my understanding that laws are only followed by those willing to follow them. Placing a “gun free zone” sign in front of a college only signals that the people on campus are unprotected. Someone who is determined to take as many lives as possible sees this as an easy target. With a low chance of resistance they would be able to accomplish their goal. We should ask ourselves how secure we would feel if we were told we had to leave our front doors wide open and place a “Do not steal” sigh in front of our homes. Since the tragedy Umpqua Community College has hired County deputy Scott Batsch to patrol the campus (4). Although it is unlikely a shooter would strike the campus again the presents of an armed person reassures the safety of those who work at and attend the college. In order to make a gun free zone safe you need those who are…

Now you may think the kids and teachers that escaped the school in time are very lucky, yes that is very true but you also have to think about the ones who did not. The teachers who risked their lives are really the heros of that day. They basically gave their lives up for students who were highly in danger that day. One teacher that saved her classroom full of students was Ms. Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis.” She locked 15 students into a tiny 3-ft.-by-4ft-. bathroom to save them from the gunman” , Adam Lanza.…

Following after the script, I asked the participants five questions which were (1) Can you explain your feeling towards gun violence? (2) How many people here heard gun shots before? And if so, what was your reaction? (3) How often over the past years have you seen someone pointing a real gun at someone else? (4) Have any of your friends or relative been shot before? If so, how did that affect you? (5) Have you ever been shot with a gun before? When the interview ended, I thanked all of the participants for their time and for being part of my undergraduate thesis and then I gave one cupcake to each participant. My role as the facilitator was to make sure everyone were comfortable, that their voices were heard and that everyone respected one…

My topic is on School Security because On April 20, 1999, in the small, suburban town of Littleton, Colorado, two high-school seniors, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, enacted an all-out assault on Columbine High School during the middle of the school day. The boys' plan was to kill hundreds of their peers. With guns, knives, and a multitude of bombs, the two boys walked the hallways and killed. When the day was done, twelve students, one teacher, and the two murderers were dead; plus 21 more were injured. The haunting question remains: why did they do it?…
