According to the article “Airbnb Will Hold Host to Higher Standard, Hire More Minorities” by Eric Newcomer: Airbnb is taking numerous steps to prevent discrimination amongst hosts and guest after being accused by several renters stating they had been discriminated by the host. Consequently, Airbnb has committed to making several changes including: elimination of same day relisting, non-screening option through Instant Book(ing) function, provide online bias training for hosts, and hire a more diverse workforce. These changes will be enforced for property owners/ host to assure that Airbnb will not discriminate based on race, religion, national origin, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation or age.

Personally, I feel these are changes in the right direction, but not sufficient. The business could be affected both positively and negatively: Negatively due to the host not agreeing to these changes; ultimately it is their home being rented to complete strangers, making the screening processes a need for them. Host not knowing who will be staying in their home may eventually lead to them completely leaving the company. Positively effects are mostly in effect to the consumer, no one should be discriminated against for whatever reason it may be so the ideology of being able to rent a home without having to submit to a background check, so to speak, is beneficial to all, especially those who in the past have been a discriminated against but still would like to use Airbnb services. It is my opinion Airbnb is not fully committed to these changes, they are committed to a temporary quick fix (affirmative action). Also if a host denies someone the ability they can still repost, just not the same day. This to me still shows some signs of discrimination, if you do not want to rent to someone for whatever reason they should not be allowed to repost at all. That same person that attempted to rent may later see that the option is available to others would definitely make someone feel unease and discriminated which is what Airbnb is trying to avoid in the first place. Also the percentage of future minority representation in the company is so minute, higher minority percentage should be hired. Within time I believe Airbnb will realize that it may not be enough there are two markets to satisfy: the consumer and the host, essentially they are both using Airbnb

Federal Register Agency-Equal Employment Opportunity Commission controls the regulation. I am an immigrant from another country, so this is interests me. It is not easy for being an immigrant from another country, I think with the Equal Employment Opportunity really helps us a lot. It should not be a problem for everybody to get employ, whether they are American, African-American, Latin, Asian, African, European, etc, it should be equal. I think there are few things that are important in employment opportunity, such as the attitude or behavior, the willingness to learn and better ourselves in order to get to the next level, the commitment to the job and of course the capability in certain field that we interest in. Based on this law, basically we cannot be discriminated just because of the color of our skin, our race, our religion, our sex, or even our national origin. Everybody has equal employment opportunity, it does not matter what color our skin are, what race/ethnicity we are, what religion, sex, or national origin we are.…

A few weeks ago, I went to see the musical Rent written by Jonathon Larson. The musical has been re made many times as it is a very popular musical. This re make was directed by Pierre Jacques-Brauit. While on my way to Cuyahoga Community College-Western campus, I became extremely enthusiastic as I had high expectations of the performance. However, after watching the two and a half hour production, I was utterly disappointed. Although the musical had some great aspects, such as the live band, cool effects, and great stage lighting, it could have been more organized.…

Habitat for Humanity originated at Koinonia Farm, which is a small Christian farming community located outside of Americus, Georgia. Clarence Jordan brought the idea to Millard Fuller, who is the founder and president of Habitat for Humanity International. They developed the idea of “partnership housing,” calling for families in need of a home to partner with volunteers to build affordable homes. In 1975 Fuller and his wife Linda established Habitat for Humanity with one clear vision in mind “a world where everyone has a decent place to live.” Habitat's ministry is based on the conviction that to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ we must reflect Christ's love in our own lives by loving and caring for one another. Our love must not be words only – it must be true love, which shows itself in action, this is the full forces that lead Fuller and his wife to establish this organization. Habitat provides an opportunity for people to put their faith and love into action, bringing diverse groups of people together to make affordable housing and better communities a reality for everyone. The idea of Habitat for Humanity is to work in partnership with God and people to build decent, affordable, houses in which people can live and grow into all what God has intended. The Fuller’s vision has become a successful reality that has presently helped build over 500,000 homes and helped over 2.5 million people worldwide. Habitat for humanity is operated based on two main sources: donations and mortgage payments of the homeowners. Donations generate from individuals, foundations, and businesses - their monies are used to purchase land and materials. The no-interest mortgage payments made by current Habitat homeowners greatly contribute to support the construction of additional Habitat homes. Some organizations such as Ameri-Corp may pay their volunteers with school courses and materials in return for their time.…

I watched the live production of “RENT”. The biggest issue in the musical “RENT” was that, everyone was poor, and HIV positive, and was struggling to survive in Alphabet City in Manhattan, New York. They were all young musical artist. The musical “RENT” showed how times can be hard for people, and some don’t notice due to the fact that they have everything they need in life, like money. One of the characters in the musical use to be a part of the group and then later on forgot his morals and where he started from I definitely think that was a big point of attack.…

“If an employer advertised an entry level job [that barred unemployed applicants] and in that community the Black unemployment rate was 20 percent and white unemployment rate was 10 percent, 20 percent of Blacks would be excluded from the get-go, and that could violate the civil rights law,”(Owen) This displays that the companies are aiming for black, African Americans to do their factory working or very hindering jobs for the company. The reason this is outrageous is that they expect that african americans are inferior and dumb. So they have no where else to go except the lowest paying…
