reason why I chose this book was because it wasn't too long and I really like the
country of Brazil. I didn't really know which book I wanted to read at first but I
looked around and this one stuck out the most and find it really enjoyable.
This story is about everyday Brazilians and the minds of each Brazilian and talks
about the country São Jorge dos Ilhéus which is a country ruled by rich planters.
The men who ran this country were most known as brave and courageous. Colonel
Horacio da Silveira and Colonel Sinhô Badaró were considered to be the two most
famous and important planters that led the Brazilians far and helped them every
step of the …show more content…
The forest is
considered a jungle which is too say that it has massive lands of growing soil. The
characters in this story João Magalhães who was a gambler and also a captain and
a military engineer. João was involved in many revolutions during his time. One late
night, João was gambling as usual and suddenly won a engineer ring that allowed
him to run the Sequeiro Grande which was a forest that had lots of produce and
very good soil. Later in the story João falls in love with his friends sister Ana. The
Badaró's quickly fall in love with João and everything he has done and they ask him
to do them a favor. That favor was the carry on the family name and so he did. He
agreed to be called Badaró.
Next character is Colonel Horacio da Silveira who I have mentioned earlier but more
details about him is that he is very wealthy and is the richest of all plantation owners
and this is all because of his hard work. Through the story you can see how hard
Colonel worked to get where he was. Through the story Colonel falls in love with a
woman named Ester. Colonel was always protected always felt safe. The reason …show more content…
At the end of the story Colonel wins everything and
comes out on top with nothing but the best.
The third and final character I will be talking about is Ester Silveira who was the wife
of Colonel, she unfortunately passed from a bad fever that was going around but
Colonel survived it. She didn't really like living in the plantation life.
The interests that stood out to me the most was the amount of love both Colonel
Sinhô Badaró and Colonel Horacio Silveira had for the beautiful forest of Sequiero
Grande. It amazes me what these two would do for this land. Just reading thorough
this book after all the deaths that happened in each of the families nothing will stop
them from going after the forest. The forest means more to them than there own
families. Which I find very sad and disgusting. Another thing that interested me was
when Colonel Sinhô Badaró was how lucky he got at the casino one night with
getting the engineer ring that allowed him to run the Sequiero Grande. I think
Colonel Horacio da Silveria would of dome anything to be in Badaró's situation but
unfortunately wasn't.
I think I definitely need to research on Brazil and the culture there. Also I need
