Andy Stanley, a leadership professional, said “great leaders last because they lead themselves first”. By this he means that leaders can not lead without being mentally stable and ready to take on tasks. Once a leader can look at themselves and be truthful, they can then look at others and be truthful. These actions inspire those that are being lead to accept acknowledgements and better understand them. Andy Stanley described a leader that was willing to be brutally honest with themselves in order to properly instill the trust of others in the leader. His model of a leader was much more progressive and structural efficient than a leader who does not include those qualities. A good leader has the ability to peer into themselves to fully understand what needs to happen. I spend a lot of time playing soccer and working hard to achieve new goals. I play with many boys my own age that I am not familiar with but we still all work for a common goal. We all want to win the game but how we get there can happen in millions of different scenarios. I strive to impose leadership qualities into my style of play on and off the field. I know that I need to do my job and take care of myself before I can effectively support others just like Andy Stanley said. When we are facing an opponent, I need to make sure that I am physically and mentally ready for the game so I can pass that on to my teammates. If I come to the game dehydrated or not focused it can be negative to my playing. Moreover, it will end up negatively impacting my teammates. When playing I also strive to maintain a positive attitude. If my team is put into a tough situation a negative attitude can breed anger and carelessness. When the team spends more time beating itself up rather than moving forward it creates a counterintuitive mindset among the team. In Carey Lohrenz’s description of teamwork she emphasizes the ability to stay positive and focused. When things go downhill for the team, we can choose to keep falling or start climbing back up.
