“Earth was created for all life, not just human life.”-Anthony Douglas Williams. Animal abuse can take forms in several different ways. One of the main ways that animals are mistreated is by cosmetic testing. The extremities of this topic have been kept out of the public eye for decades. Animal testing is wasteful, useless, and dangerous. The experiments that are done on these animals are gruesome. Bountiful amounts of people (about 62% in 2004 according to Heather Mason Kiefer) argue that animal testing is necessary in order to produce safe products. On the contrary, several studies have found these methods to be questionable. They lack accurate, safe results. Additionally, animal testing is a lot less effective …show more content…
Animal testing on cosmetics is morally inept and other alternatives need to be used.
Cosmetics are made using several different molecular and chemical compound ingredients which can be toxic or have dangerous side effects if not tested. In 1938 Congress passed the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic act due to public outrage after many people experienced death or injuries from untested products. According to the FDA animals are tested for “how much of a drug or biologic is absorbed into the blood, how a medical product is broken down chemically in the body, the toxicity of the product and its breakdown components (metabolites),” and “how quickly the product and its metabolites are excreted from the body.” However, animal testing is immensely erroneous. The FDA states that 92% of products tested on animals fail on human subjects. That fact makes a lot of people, including the FDA, question why we even consider animal testing anymore. The FDA states that …show more content…
labs for the sake of testing out ingredients that go towards things like shampoo or foundation. The horrors of these tests are inexplicable. According to MotherBoard, “Products are rubbed into the skin and eyes of animals, often causing damage including irritation, ulcers, and blindness. Animals are not given pain relief and are usually killed after the tests, according to the Humane society, by asphyxiation, neck breaking, or decapitation.” An example of this cruelty includes that “In the course of manufacturing Dysport®, an anti-wrinkle treatment, the Ipsen Corporation routinely performs a test known as Lethal Dose 50 Percent. The test involves injecting scores of mice with a powerful toxin in order to determine the dose that will kill 50 percent of the animals. The animals experience nausea and a wave of muscle paralysis, leading to severe distress as they slowly suffocate to death over the course of the three to four day procedure.” In one study, “inexperienced students at St. Lawrence University” were performing “unsupervised surgery without anesthesia on a rabbit” while it was “sitting up and kicking during the procedure.” After a lethal dose of radiation, “during a study conducted at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute—a U.S. military facility—a pig showed signs of organ failure, loss
