Application Essay: A Career As A Medical Assistant

I studied politics with the intention of joining the military; however, shortly after graduating, I was diagnosed with a medical condition which, although it does not hinder me in any way, prevented me from doing so. Following this, I decided to pursue my interest in health care and began working at my local hospital. I enjoy working as part of the multi-disciplinary team and take great satisfaction in contributing to the recovery of each patient. My primary motivations for wanting to study medicine are that I wish to be a more significant part of the medical team and be proactive in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. I consider myself to be an excellent candidate because I am hard-working, have an enquiring mind, a positive attitude, and possess many other skills which I have seen to be essential for practising medicine.
Working at the hospital has at times been humbling; for example when providing end-of-life care, performing last offices and supporting relatives after the loss of a loved one. From these experiences I have learned that medicine is as much about being a compassionate and supportive individual as it is about medications and procedures.
