The children see how people start to treat them differently when finding out they have a disease. These children do not want to be treated like they are not a person; however, they are not as smart as the other children. Autistic children get confused easily and do not understand puns, idioms, or sarcasm (Notbohm). Children do not feel comfortable but rather show their words by body language or signs which differ for each child. Notbohm states, “Focus and build on what I can do rather than what I can’t do”. Everyday activities that people do not even think about but just do are sometimes harder on autistic children. Social interactions can be hard and scary for the child who is trying so hard to understand everything but falls short.
