This allows the understanding that Becky setting a trailblazing trend within sport that adds a component to the sports world. Each of these situations helped her build her leadership approach. Not being drafted and criticized for her size allowed her to form an understanding that all leaders have to overcome some type of adversity. Overcoming adversity is what helped her throughout her playing career and was a huge aspect of coaching career. Having the ability to have success in troubling circumstances is what makes a leader influential. Hammon winning the summer league tournament was huge despite all of the naysayers, served as an example of the criticism she suffered throughout her championship run. She even understood that “those summer league guys are the future. Guys that are trying to shape and hone to come and be impact players for the Spurs, to give me the responsibility to lead those guys… that was a huge opportunity and experience and responsibility that he gave me”(Almasy, 6). Becoming the summer league coach allowed Becky to become very self-regulating in the way she coached the players as a summer league head coach. However her ability to make decisive decisions to benefit the organization was huge especially because this was her first chance to show her skills. It also gave her an opportunity to present a perception that she could handle the job of coaching men. Gaining the respect of the players is what was significant towards the trustworthiness within a coach player relationship. Her summer league team winning the championship, essentially put a stamp on her critics that believed she was not the right individual for the job. Overall Becky did everything it took to be prosperous or even puts herself in positions to be successful. During 2013, “she tore a knee ligament and instead of playing

She starts off by telling a story of her youth where she had a very harsh coach she referred to as “Coach Cowboy Boots” as if he wasn’t even deserving of a name. When she goes on deeper into detail she begins using very large amounts of pathos to say that not having a female coach in her life caused her to only be able to look up to athletes as a role model, rather than having one teach her along the way. This causes readers to have sympathy for her and all other young girls growing up without having a role model to look up to personally in their lives. She also uses pathos to say that “men are more likely to hire other men across many professions, even when there are equally or better-qualified female candidates” (435). This is not completely true as some men are hired because they are more equipped for the job, not just because they are men. But this being said, it does give an impression off that only men hire men because they did not think women are capable at coaching at that high of a demand or for that qualified of a job due to how high the pay…

Virginia State University’s Athletic Director, Mrs. Peggy Davis, came to visit and speak in our Organization and Administration of Athletics course on Monday, October 19, 2015. She was very inspiring and motivational in her talk with us. She touched down on a few key points as to how she got to her position in athletics as well how to stay there. She started off by stating that we must learn everyday from successful people. When she mentioned this, the 1-Minute Manager was brought to my mind because the young man in the book was looking for a successful coach to model after. Mrs. Davis also mentioned that we must learn from our success as well as our failures.…

He says, “Patience. It’s one of the hardest things to learn as a coach, to be patient, because it’s a very difficult sport, it is not one of your typical ball sports,” Randy says, describing how unique this sport is and how much patience a coach needs to have with the girls, the fact that they are young, and that they can make their bodies flip through the air, it is just a sport you really need to have patience with. Randy also says, “...and sometimes, you lose your patience, but that’s the thing, you got to, ya know, try and keep a level head about you when the time requires you be a little more stirn,” Randy really shows the difficulties that a coach goes through, it isn't a typical sport when you hit a ball, nor kick a ball, and when you miss you say oh I will get it next time, this sport is more a mental sport than an athletic sport, and that’s why a coach really needs to have patience. Because all the girls have the ability to do what they want, but the difficult thing is if they are mentally able to let themselves do…

According to Sara Maratta, there are only a handful of professional female athletes who possess clout and are known by the majority of the populace as quasi-celebrities. Although, it is true that the media’s coverage of women’s sports has increased, there is a plethora of evidence that male perspective still dominate. Women fans, players, and journalists continue to remain just a minority group who are struggling for recognition. She goes on to argue, women have been discouraged, disregarded, or disinvited from pursing a passion for sports, and that women cannot offer valuable insights and opinions because female professional sports reporters are often considered nothing more than talking heads who get paid to look pretty. Maratta’s use Erin Andrew’s as an example, a very intelligent and well-versed sports journalist, who’s been objectified throughout her career as a sex symbol because of the nude photos and videos of on google. After reading the story of the Low Five, it appears the new coach Shirley did not understand the complete concept of the leadership process. She was peering through the lens of only her coaching role, and not the lens of the basketball team, which were her (followers) and the leadership Situation which was her (method of training). I believe if Shirley had been willing to view all three lenses of the interactional framework surrounding leadership process, her vision would have been more reasonable and clearer as it related to the role of being an effective and efficient coach. I view Shirley as an Autocratic leader; she was negative and centered in her own power and decision making regarding the welfare of the team. She expected the team members to do what they were told without thinking for themselves, and she took full authority as well as assumed full responsibility for the success or failure of their quest (Kilburg, 2011).…

Playing CBAA for nine years has taught me so many values that I carry throughout my life now. With many years of league experience behind me, I learned from several great coaches how to think quickly and play not for myself, but for my team. I also saw that a good basketball team communicates well and learned that in doing so, everyone on the team can play well. With these skills I also learned I can work well with others in all types of settings, such as my job as a barista and my volunteer work as a National Honors Society member . I have also been taught how to be realistic but yet optimistic.. Not everyone, including myself, is a star player, and improving in itself is an accomplishment that we all should want to achieve.…
