Biochemistry Personal Statement
When I was little, a pen and paintbrush was always in my hand. I loved to doodle anywhere I could; on walls, floors, and countertops. I couldn’t say my ABC’s or count to 10, but with a box of markers my imagination was endless. In grade school, my teachers couldn't keep me from drawing simple flowers and hearts all over my papers. Until I was finally in a subject that put my skills and talents to use: science.

I love science because it is everywhere, constantly changing, and allows me to be ambitious and search for answers. Every science class has brought a new knowledge, challenge, and understanding. From the synapses of neurons to the evolution of a species, science provides the opportunity for growth and creativity in exploration. My

I have studied a variety of subjects such as animal biology, genetics, comparative vertebrate anatomy, immunology, plant biology, biochemistry, and animal behavior. I have been challenged in new ways to think, when I fail I seek to find new approaches to solutions and remain persistent. Biochemistry was a very difficult course, with may cycles and chemical processes that are very precise and intricate. By repeated drawing of each step I was able to remember and understand the different steps in each process. Through art I was able to comprehend and retain information from my courses by using different colors and drawings to simplify the material. To my surprise, I love helping my fellow classmate understand and learn the material, whether that is writing the step of the Calvin Cycle on a whiteboard or demonstrating how to conduct an experiment in lab, teaching and learning through art has become my new passion. Shifting from a wide array of interests, talents, and studies, my versatility is similar to that of a physician assistant, who has the ability to transfer their skills from one specialty to

Throughout the course of my junior year, I have been challenged to be the best artist of my ability. As a graphic designer, I have learned to view things in a different light and learned to express my creativity. Although I am still learning new things everyday about how to become a better artist, I have improved tremendously in every way ranging from the thought process all the way to finalizing each project, and I think that as the days go by I will continue to do well in my high school graphic design career, but in continuing my education in this major and working in a field closely related to it. I have produced at least 5 projects that reflect my passion for graphic design including the New York World’s Fair, currency recreation, and the handmade film poster from the first semester of my junior year and from the second half up until my most recent project, a book jacket, and an organic drink package design.…

Taking higher level courses in math and science challenges my critical thinking to be able to apply concepts learned in the real world. My curiosity to learn more about physical sciences and math keeps me attentive to understand the complexity of how things work. Though I value academics, I hold another interest in the visual and culinary arts. Since art can take on many forms, I find pleasure in drawing as well as creating graphic and ceramic art. I also enjoy creating edible forms of art by cooking and baking.…

My interest in Biomedical Science came about around four years ago when my dad was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He was treated with an intense course of chemotherapy and during this time it had me thinking about how and why a mutation in a cell can grow and cause a tumour and also how chemotherapy treatment can destroy the mutated cells (along with some healthy cells) and cause a person to have side effects such as skin discolouration, hair loss, loss of appetite and a lowered immune system. To be able to explore more in depth into what the body does has intrigued me to delve deeper. This is why I have chosen to study a degree in Biomedical Science. I had been out of education for quite a while, so in order to follow my chosen path…

Since I was old enough to hold a crayon, I have wanted to be an artist. The desire to create has grown exponentially with time, and so I attended the University of Iowa to expand my creative capabilities and learn from the work of experienced faculty and other students. Through my studies, I quickly learned a traditional fine arts education focused on technique. However, I learned the strength of my art resided in the conceptualization of my own story and emotions…

In high school, science still wasn’t a big deal to me. I loved to write and read and to make art. My sophomore year I was somehow placed into advanced biology where I got behind in understanding. I loved when we got to watch G.A.T.A.C.A for the genetics unit. Other than that my teacher was terrible and monotone. This will always remind me that I need to be excited about what I am teaching so that my students will also be…

Thirteen years ago, I can recall myself checking out drawing books as reading books. I was not an artist, but the ideal of transitioning lines and dots into a drawing picture caught my attention. During this period, I found no other books exciting to read other than these drawings books that showed me step by step how to draw animals, people, and other creations of art. My teacher stressed to me the importance of reading books that were more meaningful, but I had no desire of reading anything. Yet, I developed an interest to explore the simplicity of art sketches in those drawing books.…

My interest in science dates back to very early on, however, my devoted fascination in medicine didn’t come until I discovered an old hospital drama, “ER”. In my high school years I excelled in biology, physiology, and anatomy. When I was a sophomore in High School, I began taking Advanced Placement courses because I enjoyed the excitement of completing a difficult challenge. Although all of these courses proved to be great learning experiences I found the AP biology class to be the most delightful. Given my intense fascination with the field of medicine, it seemed only natural that I pursue a career in biomedical sciences.…

I decided to study life sciences not only because my major requires it, but because I have a strong interest in learning about how the human body works and interacts in the universe. Being a pre-pharmacy major I am specifically interested in how the body reacts with taking certain medication, along with the side effects of taking the medication. Will a certain part of the body shut down with this medication, will the nerves not be triggered if a medication is taken, or what is the side effects if one medication is taken with another are a few questions I would like to be answered. I would like to understand how the body works on a deeper and more confusing level than I could even imagine now. Life sciences cover such a wide variety of careers…
