Biomedical Engineering Personal Statement
Physics and mathematics have always been my strongest subjects and a natural pathway for me would be a career in engineering. Coupled with that I have a leaning towards medicine; I also enjoy biology and I would love to be able to work towards helping people in a healthcare environment. Having seen the radiology laboratory of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA headquarters in Vienna) was exciting because it demonstrated the role of physics and engineering in modern medicine.
Engineers and Physicists are constantly working on their new achievements in biomedical engineering; For example, advanced robotic surgeries. I can still vividly recall the eleven-year-old me fawning over the likes of Lawrence Krauss and Neil Degrasse Tyson. I was completely immersed in everything and anything pertaining to the vast universe beyond our seemingly insignificant world. I thought I had it all figured out. I would devote my life to being an astrophysicist and eventually earn my PhD. I would relish in the pink lettering on my wall that said “Dr. Mia”, but as I approach my late teens, my mind has been bombarded with what-ifs and buts. Irrespective of my change of heart, I still have an intense passion for math and science since it is how we explain the world around us, and that is why I have settled on biomedical engineering.…

In today’s society the market for new inventions is based primarily on the demand for the product verses the cost to produce and uses the product. Robotic surgical equipment is costly to purchase, plus the cost of cross training the surgeons on the machine. This is one of the reasons robotics have been slow to enter the medical field and once created slow to be utilized over the current standard medical procedures. The most well-known surgical medical robots are Da Vinci and Zeus. Less well known are the catheter based robots; Sensei X systems, Magellan systems, and NIOBE magnetic navigation systems.…
