C. S. Lewis: What Makes A Hero?

“Since it is so likely that (children) will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage. Otherwise you are making their destiny not brighter but darker” (C.S. Lewis). We need heroes to stand out and help when needed or called to action. Heroes should be people that all cultures/people all over the world can look up to and have a good example no matter how bad their life is. A hero puts others before himself, loves to give back and not take, and one who stands out and sets a good example.
A hero puts others before himself like doctors and firefighters. Every day their life is put on the line to save others’ lives. They wake up and make the choice to save and heal the hurt. For example a single mom that works two full time jobs just to provide for her family because her husband was killed in Afghanistan fighting for our country. To some people this choice to put others first is real. Take someone with a job as small as driving a city bus if they quit or saw people on the side of the street and just kept driving all those people would not get where they needed to go. They go about their day like any other person, but rise up and set an amazing example for children all over the world when needed or called to. People need a good person in their life, even if the just hear about it on television or from someone else in their life. Hero is not just a title, but a definition. “In the film world, we can all be heroes. In the real world, where heroism can cost you your life or the life of the ones you love, people aren't so willing to make those sacrifices. When they do, they are set apart from the rest of us.”(John Rhys-Davies). A hero can be anyone that wants to be. That can function in life without boasting and have a need for attention. They work hard and take each moment as it comes, not worrying about tomorrow, but living today like it was there
