Camp Counselor Application Essay
Volunteering as a summer camp counselor at two different camps has taught me the intangibles of real world life and has improved my leadership skills exponentially. I have volunteered for two summer camps, one being run by Toronto Parks and Recreation and the other being Toronto Empire Athletics. The experience I have obtained from being a camp counselor has helped me get a broader view of the world amongst many other life skills. As a camp counselor, I was required to deal with the diverse set of problems laid out to me on a daily basis and these obstacles have taught me skills that can not be learned through studying. For example, the patience and maturity required to teach and play with children with special needs are skills that are easily transferable to real life. Another example where …show more content…
At this summer camp, my job was to supervise children, create art activities and engage in physical activity but I had a deeper goal in mind, which was to understand and develop a connection with each camper. To perform this task, it required me to become a leader which meant I had to gain the respect of them and their parents. This process was eye-opening and tedious but it helped me in becoming the strong leader I am today as without this experience my patience and communication skills would not be as good as they are today. In addition, my many interactions with parents and especially the children were genuinely a life altering moment as I learned how to communicate with a variety of people and I discovered how to properly motivate individuals. These skills built the groundwork which helped me in my rugby and DECA success. Toronto Empire Athletics is the most recent summer camp I was a camp counselor at and I took part in this activity this past summer every Sunday for three

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

I have gone to Camp Sierra Vista for the past eight years of my life. Camp has taught me many things. How to be myself, how to work well with others, how to have fun, and mainly how to be a leader. I was never really one to be a leader of a group at school, but at camp, I was.…

I am Ethan Ritz and a current 9th grader at Milken. For Service Learning this year, I was a Counselor in Training at Camp VBS for two weeks of the summer. A meaningful experience I had while being a CIT was playing with the kids in the pool. They loved the attention and the activities we played. I would give them a piggy back ride around the pool and if they wanted would throw them in the air. This always put a huge smile on their faces. One kid even said, “That was awesome!” when I threw him in the air. I loved making each kids day at camp even better.…

One example when I have shown service and my leadership ability is when I helped coach youth soccer the past 3 years here in the Lindsborg, Kansas community. Every spring season, the men’s and women’s soccer programs here at Bethany College help coach kids ages 4-12, we conduct practices and games for the youth of the community. One player from both the men’s and women’s team is paired up and together they are in charge of their own…

Social impacts of volunteering are technically tangible because it betters your life and connections, but there are also aspects that the individual volunteer can take away such as workplace experience and health benefits. Workplace experience allows you to strengthen your resume, allowing you to get a better occupation. The most common skills gained are networking, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Networking is an important skill to have as it can supply you with future recommendations. In tenth grade, I went on a missions trip with my church to Mink Lake, which is a camp by the Gunflint Trail in northern Minnesota. During the missions trip, we prepared a camp for the summer. Some of my personal jobs were to help clean out two sheds and reorganize them, haul logs, and trim trees all over the camp. The trip benefitted myself and the other people on the missions trip because we were able to help people have a fun experience at camp over the summer, and we also helped the people running the camp to not have to work so hard to prepare the camp for the summer campers. Another reason it was a good experience for all of us workers is because we did not have our cell phones, so we were able to form new relationships with each other since we were not constantly distracted by our…

This past summer I was part of the leadership staff at Camp Howard. I was a unit director for the 1st and 2nd graders who came to camp for the day. This unit consisted of 30 campers and 4 counselors whom I was in charge of. I am also the treasurer of the College of Democrats and I volunteer with multiple organizations. For example, I help students and community members register to vote and I work closely with the office of Lane County of Democrats. I volunteer with the National Society of Collegiate Scholars by holding toy drives for homeless shelters. Another service experience I've had is volunteering with the Sparrow Club in my hometown. The Sparrow Club helps…

Last year, I went to Pinetree Preschool, where there is nothing but young children. That was an experience I enjoyed and found so valuable and opened my eyes to the potential and possibilities of children. This year, I chose the complete opposite of Pinetree and I volunteered at Primrose, a retirement home for people who suffer from alzheimer's or dementia. At Primrose, I saw a completely different side of human life. That may seem like an exaggeration but I tend not to spend much time with people much, much older than me, as they were at Primrose. I learned an incredible amount of patience and understanding and just life in general during my time volunteering at Primrose, that I could not had received anywhere else.…

I have partaken in TI@ti, sophomore year and currently, which is an organization based on increasing leaderships skills and increasing awareness against drugs and alcohol. Last year, I guided peers to make healthier life choices and to take positive risks. I stepped up when my advisors, Ms. Ramirez and Mr. Rosenfeld (at the time) needed presenters for the PTSO meetings, Saturday Academy for 7th and 8th graders, and for 600+ seniors who attended prom last school year. The Saturday Academy was a huge leadership role where I had to advise seventh and eighth graders on what to expect from high school. I volunteer at various locations such as for the 9/11 Day of Service, Jersey Cares Day, and Paterson’s Operation clean up. In all of these services, I did landscaping because I felt as if the…

Throughout my high school career, I have been given numerous opportunities to lead other students by example, work ethic, volunteerism, and school involvement. I believe that my greatest impact as a leader in high school has been through my participation in a Service Learning Class. This class gave me the chance to help and lead others by tutoring younger students in the middle school and elementary school. As a senior, I felt responsible for providing a voice for the class in ideas and decisions to help better our school. I worked with administrators, teachers, and class members to promote healthy habits of responsibility, school pride, respect, and service.…

I needed to help others to become involved in their school. I enjoyed attending games and other activities. This showed me that school pride was more than wearing your school colors. I was a Falcon! People knew who I was and expected me to act a certain way. Later, I was given the leadership role of cheer co captain my junior year and captain my senior year. This allowed me to develop leadership qualities. I not only was responsible for making sure my squad had information about games, but I was a person they could trust. I was the only four year cheer leader on the squad. I had the knowledge of the program and understood what it felt like to be an underclassman. These unique experience have allowed me to learn compassion. When you have compassion you build life long…

I have met new people and have become friends with people I thought I would never talk to. It has showed me how much fun you can have if you keep an open mind. I had several responsibilities and worked closely with children of varying age groups. My experience with children goes beyond that summer camp as well. Coming from Liberty Pines Academy (a kindergarten through eighth grade school), as an elective the eighth grade students could be an intern for an elementary school teacher. I was the intern for a first grade class, and doing that might just be my favorite part of middle school. Seeing those kids everyday was just an amazing experience.…

Throughout my life, my grandmother has taken me volunteering with her. This is where she taught me how to put others before myself and that actions speak louder than words. I believe that this helped to peak my interests in a career helping people and psychology because I learned that all people need help at some point in their lives and in different ways. You need to approach every person you help in a different way, as an individual.…
