Summer Camp Personal Statement
BeaTPAC 2016 Application

Have you ever worked at a summer camp? What is your experience working with children? Please explain. I have indeed worked at a summer camp as a counselor before. The summer camp was one held annually by my neighborhood. I had several responsibilities and worked closely with children of varying age groups. My experience with children goes beyond that summer camp as well. Coming from Liberty Pines Academy (a kindergarten through eighth grade school), as an elective the eighth grade students could be an intern for an elementary school teacher. I was the intern for a first grade class, and doing that might just be my favorite part of middle school. Seeing those kids everyday was just an amazing experience. Watching them learn and have fun was terrific, and getting to be a part of that was truly a joy.

Since my mother always had to work during the summer she could never take me. Even though I partially knew the outcome, every year since the fifth grade I would plead with her to find a way for me to go. BeaTPAC has always been seen to me as a time where I could enjoy myself with other theatre kids doing what we all love. I want to be a counselor to make that statement true. I want to be a counselor because I want to do everything possible to make a child’s summer great.

Age group Preference: ____________ Why? In all truthfulness, I don’t really have an age group preference. I genuinely love kids of all ages, and don’t mind working with any specific age group. However, if given a choice, I would most likely choose older kids. This is simply because I think they would be easier to work with, and it would be nice to see kids with already developed talents and skills.

My youth group has created a special place in my life. It provides me with Godly friends and a non-judging environment. After moving around so many times in my life it has become hard to make friends. I have been to many different youth groups and most of them I feel the need to pretend to be who I am not. Thankfully, at Rocky Bayou youth group I can drop my guard and I feel free to talk without feeling judged. Surprisingly enough, I have made multiple friends that are supportive, honest, and amusing. Rocky Bayou youth group makes me feel welcome and free to me without harsh worldly…

Drenched in sweat and trying to avoid touching anything made of metal, I stood in the back of the dump truck shoveling mulch into a wheelbarrow. The temperature outside was in the upper nineties reaching for triple digits. I could see heat waves coming off of the scorched ground, but I didn’t have time to pay attention to any of that. We had a task to finish and we would see to it no matter what obstacles mother nature or life in general would throw our way. This is the mentality that working in landscaping every summer throughout high school taught me.…

While being a camp counselor is extremely challenging, and some might look down on the fact that I have spent my summers working at a summer camp instead of interning or having a job that pays more. The truth is I would not have spent my summers anywhere else, being able to help build and shape these kids minds in a positive way was the biggest reward. Seeing the change in each child from June to August made me want to wake up and do this everyday no matter what challenge could be presented . My summers as a camp counselor helped me realize that teaching is what I want to do for the rest of my…

The truly great thing about camp is that it encourages independence while supporting the parents' values. When my kids were in elementary, I was a single parent. I had a lot to teach them and I relied heavily on my family and community to help me. Camp was part of that community, reinforcing the lessons I tried to teach my children at home. And every time I hear someone say that my son or daughter is a "good kid", I know that it is in part because their camp helped raise them. Not only that, but camp makes the learning painless, fun even.…
