This week in the cardia pre-op clinic, a Nurse Practitioner (NP) named Dot told me about her patient needed child life and that she was not prepared for her surgery. The patient was an 8-year-old girl from Puerto Rico who spoke Spanish and some English. I met D.F. and her mother in the waiting area of the pre-op clinic. I accompanied D.F and her mother to the lab and assessed D.F.’s understanding of why she was coming to the hospital. D.F. told me that she had a murmur and when I said, “oh, a murmur in your heart,” she told me, “no, a murmur in my chest.” Then I went back up to the pre-op clinic and spoke to Dot, asking her if the other had shared her understanding of the surgery and if there was any reason why she was not prepared for her surgery. Dot shared that the surgery had been moved up one week, and when she asked the mother that morning if D.F. had been prepared she did not realize the importance of preparing her child. I decided it would be best to talk with the mother first about preparing D.F. and giving her the option of preparing D.F. herself.…
I am Nichele Greer. I'm a ninth grader at Palmdale High, a student athlete, and a Lancaster Youth Development Foundation Ambassador. A LYDF ambassador is a 9th-12th grade student that does activities to provide great things for the community. While we're helping our community we also receive community service hours. I strive to be the best I can be in any and everything. I'm pretty much a perfectionist. Later on in my life I Hope to work somewhere in the medical field. Specifically in sports medicine. I want to be in sports medicine for my love of sports. I want to be able to help a player back into the game. To reach my goal, I'm going to do my Intro Into Health Careers class this year and Sports Med. for my next three years. I want to be…
After high school in not sure what exactly what I want to do, but I have two colleges in mind. My first choice is Berks Technical Institute, where I would study to be a medical assistant. One reason why I’m debating on that profession is because not everyone is looking for a medical assistant, and I don’t want to study something if its going to turn out pointless. My plan B will be, the arts institute of Philadelphia, where I would like to study culinary arts, I have a serious passion for cooking and baking. My plan C will be getting a job with my uncle if any of this does not go as planned. Medical assistants work with physicians, mainly in outpatient care facilities, such as medical offices and clinics. If I were to go into that field my day would consist of Answering telephones, Updating and filing patient medical records, Coding and filling out insurance forms, Scheduling appointments and Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services. Starting pay right out of college for medical assistants would be $10.14 an hour. Additional education is not mandatory but would also be nice to move up to a registered nurse, which they get paid a better wage. Some obstacles I would have to over come to pursue my dreams into going into this profession would be, being more social with others, I will over come these obstacles slowly because I am a very closed and shy person. Also, if my plans do not work of for college as I stated earlier, I will work in the construction field as a back up plan. I came to this decision when I took a course back in the 10th grade for home decorating, and I loved it although I had to drop it off my schedule because I was short a couple of credits. My day would start off by making a couple of phone calls to find out when shipments are coming in such as power tools, drywall…
My plan will succeed because I will do everything the best of my abilities and stay focused. I will go on shadowing jobs to see what this job is all about. I will get my name out there so when I get my degree people are coming to me, offering me some jobs. Then I will be a physical therapist and everything will fall into place.…
Cardiac surgeons are people who do treatments and surgeries to treat people with heart and lung disease. They also deal with vessels and organs. There are a lot of different types of operations. There is heart valve repair and replacements, heart defect repair, coronary artery bypass, aneurysm repair, heart transplant, lungs (lung disease). They complete the most surgeries in their field. Grey’s Anatomy influenced me because in that show it’s a bunch of different types of surgeons and I liked cardio the best.…
As a child growing up I think I always wanted to work in the medical field, seeing my mother as a LPN. I also have always had a natural interest in the medical field because I like to watch a lot of ER and hospital shows. At first I didn’t really know what health career I wanted to pursue. I just knew that I liked being in the healthcare class and learning about the different health science careers and what they do. I think a medical office administration assistant would be a very good career for me because I am very helpful and can always be counted on when people need me. This is not my only career choice, it’s just the first I want to pursue. One year after graduation I will hopefully have my medical assisting certificate or at least be working on getting it. Around my five year mark I want to try to get a degree from a nursing school and become licensed as a registered nurse. After that I will try to specialize in pediatrics, so I can be a pediatric nurse. In ten years, I want to get my nurse practitioners license, so that I could work directly with a pediatrician.…
Over the years I have discovered many things, alone, about myself, that would benefit me in the long run. As a child, math and science didn’t interest me, but I always knew what profession I wanted to take up, while in college. It was not until my high school years that I begun to realize the chosen field I wanted to major in medicine. I was surprised on how much I had evolved on the idea of math and science. Still, I was very much unaware of my next step with fulfilling my dream in college. However through research and determination I would soon be able to work towards my goals.…
After high school, I plan on attending the University of California, Riverside and obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree. In my time in college, I hope to strengthen some of my skills such as independence, perseverance, and determination in order to prepare for a harder education after college. After I graduate college, I plan on taking the Medical College Admission Test in order to attend medical school and become a pediatrician. Being a physician has always interested me, but I did not actually plan on following through with this career until my high school years. I learned it is a very well-paid career and that being a physician for children will make the career more enjoyable.…
My heart and soul is set on becoming a doctor. Given the chance, I am certain that I will be a successful physician because of my passion towards the sciences, commitment to healthcare, and intimacy with patient communication. Learning the art of healing is something to be revered and sought after and I am willing to do whatever it takes to become a humble and respected…
Coronary heart disease or CHD is a narrowing of the small blood vassals that supply the heart with blood and oxygen. The disease develops when a combination of fatty material, calcium, and scar tissue or plaque, builds up in the arteries that supply the heart with blood. This slows the blood flow and causes chest pain. Men in their 40s have a higher risk of CHD than women. But, as women get older, their risk increases so that it is almost equal to a man's risk.…
Five years from now I will be in my last year of college, prepping for medical school. By the end, I hope to have a major in Biomedical Engineering and a minor in Molecular Biology and Chemistry. In the beginning of my senior year in college, I plan to take the MCAT. The goal is to get between a 500-528. I hope to have a 3.7 GPA in college and maintain my CCMA certification along with my CPR certification. My target is to have applied to Emory University, Stanford Medical School, or Cornell for a chance in their medical school programs. Sometime in college my aim is to have traveled to an underdeveloped part of the world. I wish to help those in need by joining Doctors without Borders or contacting a similar organization. I want to help those who are less fortunate and discover the diseases that are plaguing some parts of the…
Every person has their own passions and their own interests in different topics. I have a strong interest in the Medical field and everything that has to do with Anatomy and Biology likewise I love working with people so my dream is to become an anesthesiologist. In order for me to define my career as successful I want to have full days of helping others. I want to be ready to go home at the end of the day, and wake up excited to go to work. I believe my success will be directly linked to my background. When I was younger I watched my single mom struggle. I know it was really hard for her because she was going to school, working full time, and taking me back and forth from day care. Because of her I never had a doubt in my mind about going to college, it was just something I knew I was going to do, but I wasn’t sure what I was going to do in school until my aunt got sick; every day I watched her suffer…
It has also helped prepare me for my future nursing classes, giving me a head start. My interest are kinda all over the place but most definitely is some where in the medical field. I want to make myself into a very successful person. My interest is basically the same, I love science. Learning about science and watching documentaries have always seem to intrigued me. My goal by going to college is to come out doing something I love and most importantly helping others. That has been my ultimate goal in life, I want to make someone, be animal or person better. I feel I have the patients and qualities to succeed in college and the medical field. I want to go to class every day, stay on what I need to do. I want to join a club make some good friends. Also, by joining clubs I began to make new opportunities. Most importantly I want out of the loop my family has created. I have seen what living paycheck to paycheck does to a person. Mostly how it affects their children and I don't want that for a…
“The Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe is a traumatizing story about a person who murdered an innocent old man because he thought that his eye was evil. The story states that the narrator was afraid of the eye and that is why he wanted to rid himself of it. The narrator had many signs of being proven to go to jail or to go to a mental hospital.…
