National Junior Honor Society is a great opportunity for me; something that I am really excited to be apart of. I’ve been tossing and turning in bed for the past month wondering what to write or how to prepare myself for such an extraordinary honor to become apart of the NJHS. All through my life I’ve thought of myself as a leader, never a follower. I would love to be apart of this establishment to share my thoughts and ideas for fundraisers and collecting donations, but also to listen and consult of what others have to say because there is no leader without the help of his/her people. I believe I possess all the qualities to be apart of the NJHS; Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. I enjoy helping the needy and have participated in some charities. For example, the Relay for Life charity that donates money to former or new cancer patients undergoing chemo therapy. My mother and I attend every year and donate money. We also have a grand old time going, participating and helping out because my mother is a breast cancer survivor and my grandma had died from brain cancer so it runs in the family. Being apart of and even being considered to be in NJHS is honestly a complete honor.

Your powers are not in your strengths but in how you use your strengths. To be apart of the NJHS you have to have leadership. A lot of my family and friends have told me I have great leadership skills and I am knowledgeable to use them well under stress or for projects and school group work. For example, my friend Kyra, my mom, and I went to visit my aunt

Throughout my four years of high school, I have consistently pushed myself beyond my limits and comfort zones in attempt to discover my place in the world. I spent most of first two years discovering who I was as an individual, ultimately manifesting into inspiration for success. I grew out of “fitting in” and decided to turn my life and aspirations towards a greater direction; on this road of discovery, I separated myself from those who valued arrogance and indifference. “Nerd Squad” is what I am a part of today, which is why I am currently confident enough to apply for the National Honors Society Scholarship. I believe I have grown into a tenacious, sympathetic, and joyous young man that the entire school has seen develop, and I am honored…

In her article Kari Franklin describes how she created a successful learning environment in which students developed proper social skills through peer conferencing. Some kids go to school for purely social reasons, Franklin realized that by introducing in- class discussions, she eliminated the need for excessive chatter during instructional time. After realizing that the group sharing was not working out, she looked at the peer conferencing from a social competence point of view. In peer conferences, students team up and share what they have written with one another. Not only does this activity improve conversations about writing, it also builds on core conversational skills through peer collaboration. Through trial and error Franklin went from peer editing, to peer response and finally settled on peer conferencing. An effective peer conference consists of multiple social skills…

As quite the introvert, I never would have imagined myself as the secretary of such a renowned organization: the National Honor Society. However, I had decided to take on the challenge of running for board, requiring me to give a speech to our 500+ NHS members. My strengths did not lie in public speaking or persuasion like the other candidates. Instead, my speech involved me singing Mulan’s “Be a Man,” using ingenuity and humor to win over opinions. I believe that pushing yourself into an unfamiliar situation is the best way to learn and grow, as this approach demands problem solving and innovative thinking. NHS has pushed me to be more outgoing and active in the community by giving me the privilege of leadership, and I would definitely serve…
