Managing Multidisciplinary Professionals The relationship between employees is shown on an organization chart, and shown in a vertical and/or horizontal dimension (Fisher, 2013). Vertical dimension shows the upward and downward channels of communication, decision making, and direction of activities. The vertical dimension shows the chain of command (Fisher, 2013). In that the vertical dimension shows the chain of command, it lets everyone know that the three doctors are the ones in charge of this new venture. defensible medical practices which are also an aspect of a vertical dimension. The horizontal dimension of an organizational structure provides the basis for dividing work into specific jobs and tasks which are then placed into units (Sandilands, 2014).
The horizontal dimension denotes the type of departmentalization employed by the organization (Fisher, 2013). The new venture would be horizontal in that they would have a support staff that would follow the office managers lead that is following the three doctors instructions. Authority is the right to direct with permission to act (Fisher, 2013). The right to direct means the right to give orders, and oversee activities. The person hired to oversee the office staff was given the authority to direct the office staff. Of course the three doctors also have the utmost authority. Responsibility is the obligation to complete tasks as assigned (Fisher, 2013). People that are responsible follow directions. Responsible people are expected to follow those directions correctly and completely (Fisher, 2013). This new venture should be an organic structure. Organic organizations have few rules and procedures. It also would allow for informal relationships between workers and supervisors, which would make this organization more flexible and adaptable (Fisher, 2013). Organic structures employ unit or small batch technology. Healthcare could be categorized as a unit type technology as patients receive care on a person-by-person basis (Fisher,
2013). Differentiation acknowledges that various elements in this organization will provide different specialties and activities (Fisher, 2013). Integration understands that these different and specialized organizational units must work in harmony with each other to benefit the overall well-being of the whole organization.

This organization should departmentalize by service. In healthcare circumstances, patient services are referred to as service lines or units established to care for patients in a given category (Sandilands, 2014). This organization is going to have an obstetrician, a gynecologist, and a urology specialist all providing very different services.
