North of the intersection, Brimley and McNicoll, resides a school called Agnes Macphail Public School. The school is named after Agnes Campbell Macphail, a Canadian politician who served as the first female Member of Parliament in the Canadian House of Commons. The school, founded in 1981, stood for many of the same things that Macphail did, including her commitment to greatness. Macphail, the MP, made ripples in equality and Canadian politics with her penal reforms , while Macphail the PS is one of several Toronto Gold Eco Schools and strives to give students access to educational technology and a plethora of extracurricular activities. On March 7th, 1980, two high school freshman were found smoking in the bathroom at Piscataway High School in Middlesex County, NJ. The students were escorted to the vice principal Mr. Choplick’s office. The defendant, TLO, who was one of the students that were caught smoking denied the accusation. Mr. Choplick inspected TLO’s purse and found a box of cigarettes. Afterward removing the box of cigarettes, he saw a pack of rolling papers. Mr. Choplick suspected that a closer examination of the purse may yield evidence of drug use and that a thorough inspection would be needed. After a thorough search, he found a small amount of marijuana, a pipe, a number of empty plastic bags, a large amount one dollar bills, an index card with a list of who…

In 1949 a law was made in Pennsylvania that public schools must start each school day with ten bible verses being read, however, there could be no comment on the verses that were read. Students would stand and say the verses along with the teachers. They would then have the students recite the Lord's Prayer. If the teachers refused to read the verses every morning they could be fired. This law angered some people because they believed it was a violation of the First Amendment and so two families sued.…

In 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court landmark decision Brown v. Board of Education found that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. Throughout the United States, communities had varying reactions to school desegregation running the gamut from acceptance to resistance. After failing to desegregate on their own, the schools in Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada were compelled by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to act. As a result, they created the Sixth-Grade Center Plan of Integration to desegregate the elementary schools within the district. The plan required children to be bussed to the Westside (the black community) for one year during sixth grade. All other years, the children from the black community were bussed to the white schools. To determine the community perceptions of the school desegregation efforts in Las Vegas data including interview transcripts from local activists, newspaper articles and audio interviews were reviewed.…

For decades in Canada, officially beginning in 1892, children were taken away from their families and put into schools that would change and take away their views and beliefs, initial knowledge, image, and identity. In the earlier stages, these schools were referred to as Industrial Schools for Indians. Today, we call them Residential Schools with Aboriginal survivors who are able to tell their stories. Aboriginal people suffered while there schools were running. This essay will compare the knowledge in a recent article to primary sources that were written while Industrial Schools were in action. The actions of assimilating Aboriginal people through a strict form of education caused a negative butterfly effect upon the public and Aboriginal population. This act was run by the Canadian government and churches as an act of assimilation through education. The school system performed strict forms of discipline towards the Aboriginal children to civilize them to live through the dominant culture. The method of assimilation was unsuccessful, Aboriginal people…
