E. HOLMES DISTRICT — Parents and members of the community feeding into the valley schools are invited to a meeting to learn more about the plans and offer feedback to those plans to close Charm Elementary School.
The school board has relocated its monthly business meeting to Keim Lumber in Charm on Monday at 6 p.m. Following the regular business meeting, board members will meet with parents and members of the community to discuss the plan and get feedback on both the decision to close, reorganize the valley schools and sell the building, said Superintendent Erik Beun.
It's a plan the district has been contemplating for about four years, with the recent timeline established through discussion among members of the board, administration and advisory board for the

“We want to get a sense for how do we, as a group of five, steer the district in the right direction,” he said, noting it's not always easy to settle on choices for which everyone is supportive.
With current enrollment, all the valley school — Charm, Flat Ridge and Wise — and their staffs are not being fully optimized, said Beun, noting the reorganization plan would put K-4 students at Flat Ridge and 5-8 students at Wise. The change would be effective with the start of the 2018-19 school year.
Both Flat Ridge and Wise would still have available classroom space to accommodate for future growth in the student population, said Beun. And, financial gains from the proposed sale of the building and elimination of maintenance costs would be absorbed into the district's general fund.
A formal resolution to close Charm and reorganize enrollment at Flat Ridge and Wise is expected to come before the board at its Dec. 19 business

I have never been to a school board meeting before, so I am not entirely sure what to expect. I know it is an open meeting, so I am sure there will be several parents of students in the district as well as citizens of area that will be affected by decisions made by the school board. In terms of the agenda, the board will undoubtedly discuss future school functions and the associated budgets, as well as personnel matters. This is a policy-making meeting so I do not expect there to be much input from the audience other than possible questions or concerns. Hopefully the board will address the agenda in an efficient and time effective manor and all disputes will be put to rest.…

One of the teachers took the podium addressing the school board with some concerns about her school having very few teachers. She told the board that the shortage of teachers meant that class sizes were large and the work load was heavy. She made the comment “if I look tired it’s because I am.” I was impressed by that statement because that teacher didn’t have to go around campus complaining instead, she went to the school board to let them know. Mary Jadlowski Assistant Superintendent discussed an AP program that allows high school students that qualify to start taking college courses before they graduate. Those were the most interesting things about the meeting in my opinion. Towards the end of the meeting President Dr. Olgletree discussed how they were going to spend their funds within the district and surrounding areas. I wasn’t really interested in that because I didn’t understand some of the things he was talking about. What was surprising is that after the teacher had been chosen to have her name on the new school almost everyone who was in the meeting had left excluding the Board of Education members. It seemed to me the audience cared about nothing else that was said because…
