Peckham, a nonprofit organization, was founded in 1976 to provide job training and competitive employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. The name honors former State of Michigan Rehabilitation Services Director, Ralf A. Peckham.
Peckham has grown to be one of the largest vocational community rehabilitation
programs in the state of Michigan with a diverse group of clients from many partnering agencies. Offering more than 30 different rehabilitation and human services programs from art to career planning, pre-employment screening to facility based training, youth programs to organizational employment and residential services.

To qualify you must have a disability that has created a barrier to employment. This position requires mainly verbal communication via telephone with incoming calls from clients. Communication with clients would include how to obtain, renew, replace their lost or stolen passports and/or obtain an emergency passport.
You should also have good written communication skills for reporting to management and supervisors.
Nonverbal communication comes into play with the tone of your voice and how you handle stressful situations pertaining to client frustration. Clients that may be anxious, stressed, scared or angry.
At times you may come across communication barriers such as:
Personality – Lacking effective listening skills or being problem focused vs solution focused
Interests – Clients and representatives have different interests on how to come up with the solution.
Gender – Some people lack the ability to communicate with a different genders. For example: A male representative might talk to a female client as if she is beneath him or a male client may feel that a female representative may not have the intelligence that he is looking for.
Cultural – In some cultures the women cannot communicate for themselves. Language barriers are also a factor.
