Ceremonial Speech
The ceremony in which we now share is both ancient and timeless. It is tradition to welcome our children into the larger community of fellowship and faith. We recognize that each child is a special gift to us, an individual person in his or her own right, a reminder of the ongoing promise and creative power of life. And each child is precious, with a right to a warm and loving reception. Little children in particular are magic. They unite us all; parents and non-parents, old and young, boys and girls and women and men, all are brought together by the arrival of a child. This is a special occasion, shared by parents, family, and friends to mark the fact that we all have a responsibility for the care and nurturing of this child. At this time, we wish to recognize this child by his given name, for it is his name that is symbolic of the individuality that we wish to affirm.

Eight years ago, two pink lines signaled my greatest honor, and challenge. My daughter arrived at twenty-six weeks gestation. She fit completely in my hand: a tiny piece of my soul. A miracle for my wife and me, she fought to survive. Our first, a boy born at the same twenty-six week mark, drew breath for exactly twenty-four hours. A lifetime for him, not long enough for us. Her birth provided us with a new hope and opportunity.…

Talcott Parsons saw socialization as the process through which, individuals developed and internalized a sense of norms and values. Parsons theorized that there were three stages of socialization, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary. After one has gone through these stages of development, an individual may go through a re-socialization process, and this happens in different stages through life, for example; they retire, become unemployed or institutionalized. It was October 25, 2001 at about 10:00 at night. I was at the hospital, about 4 and a half years old with my father and older brother. I remember being filled with excitement when we were finally allowed to see my mother after 8 long grueling hours. We stepped into the hospital room and saw first sight of the new little one that was now a part of our complete family. He was so chubby and peaceful looking, and had soft, shiny red hair with deep blue eyes. I was instantly in love with that little boy. That day had marked the beginning of our long and still continuing journey as brother and sister. I could not wait to see and take part in the person he would become right before my eyes. My little brother is very kindhearted, loyal to a fault, and his genuine personality has helped to setup the tight bond that we have today.…
