Individual Behavior
Chap 5: Personality and Values personality - Enduring characteristics that describe an individual’s behavior.

heredity - Factors determined at conception; one’s biological, physiological, and inherent psychological makeup.

personality traits - Enduring characteristics that describe an individual’s behavior.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) A personality test that taps four characteristics and classifies people into 1 of 16 personality types.

• Extraverted (E) versus Introverted (I). Extraverted individuals are outgoing, sociable, and assertive. Introverts are quiet and shy.

• Sensing (S) versus Intuitive (N). Sensing types are practical and prefer routine and order. They focus on details. Intuitives rely on unconscious processes and look at the “big picture.”

• Thinking (T) versus Feeling (F). Thinking types use reason and logic to handle problems. Feeling types rely on their personal values and emotions.

• Judging (J) versus Perceiving (P). Judging types want control and prefer their world to be ordered and structured. Perceiving types are flexible and spontaneous.

Big Five Model - A personality assessment model that taps five basic dimensions.

• Extraversion. The extraversion dimension captures our comfort level with relationships. Extraverts tend to be gregarious, assertive, and sociable. Introverts tend to be reserved, timid, and quiet.

• Agreeableness. The agreeableness dimension refers to an individual’s propensity to defer to others. Highly agreeable people are cooperative, warm, and trusting. People who score low on agreeableness are cold, disagreeable, and antagonistic.

• Conscientiousness. The conscientiousness dimension is a measure of reliability. A highly conscientious person is responsible, organized, dependable, and persistent. Those who score low on this dimension are easily distracted, disorganized, and unreliable.

    A disadvantage of falling on the extreme end of extraversion would be impulsiveness, the fact that the high extravert acts before thinking, and that they fail to learn from a mistake before moving on to the next thing. An advantage would be that they are socially dominant, have a good self-image, and have more positive than negative feelings and attitudes about life. An advantage for falling on the high end of openness to experience would be that they are very imaginative and innovative; however, some people would think that this is a disadvantage. I do not. Another advantage is that they reject or question stereotypical attitudes, complex, and non-conforming (McAdams, p185). A disadvantage would be people’s perception of them and absorption. Someone scoring high in absorption may become so wrapped up in their imagination that they lose themselves. An advantage of conscientiousness would be that they are hard-workers, very responsible and reliable, well-organized, and persistent all of which employers and friends value. A disadvantage would be that they are not very spontaneous, and they may seem overly cautious. Another disadvantage may be that they are predictable; however, like all of the advantages and disadvantages of the clusters, it depends on someone’s perception of what they think are good qualities and what they think are bad qualities.…

    When a person acquires the letter E, their interest is most present when dealing with the outer world of actions, objects, and persons. Also, another form of the word extraversion is extravert. An extravert is an outgoing, overtly expressive person. When I added the position of cheerleading captain to my personal life, I knew that I needed to become a leader for the squad. In my opinion, a leader needs possess and outgoing demeanor in order to assume control and responsibility in different situations. I found out that leading a group of sixteen (16) high school girls was very complicated and my extraverted personality helped me lead them properly. For example, during a summer practice, four (4) cheerleaders were on their cell phones, which was strictly prohibited during practice hours. Due to the violation of the rules, the entire cheer squad was required to complete “suicides” in the gym, which is a form of exercise. After our punishment was complete, I forced the cheerleaders to power their phones off and keep them inside of a bag, out of reach. If I had an introverted personality, I believe that it would not have been as simple to punish the members of the high school cheerleading squad. I would have been to shy to speak up. A lesson that can be taken from this specific example is as follows: in order to be a successful leader or role model, an extraverted personality type will make the experience(s) easier. This specific personality will help a leader communicate better with a group of people, which will lead to an overall better connection. However, the authors present a two step process that has helped people find their type. The first step is called the four dimensions of personality type. This means how we engage in the world, where we focus our energy, they type of information we notice, and how w make decisions, and whether we like to live organized or spontaneous.
