The first american cheer leading squads preformed at colleges in the eastern part of the United States during the 1800's. Squad members were all men. During the 1970's cheer leading became a popular sport. Squads focused on strength and stunts. They competed with other cheer leading squads. Then during the early 1980's, cheer leading squads not associated with school or sports leagues, whose main objective was competition, began to emerge. The first organization to call themselves all-stars and go to competitions. This was then called competitive cheer, The people in the squad were called competitive cheer leaders.…
In my opinion I think that Cheerleading should be a competitive sport because cheerleaders work as hard as all other sport players do. For example cheerleaders show muscle, athleticism and agility when practicing and cheering at games. Cheerleaders show muscle because they lift other people they throw and stack people on top of other people to make a pyramid. They show Agility because when doing cheers they have to make sharp and quick movements with their hands and their feet. I don’t think that it’s fair that cheerleading isn’t a competitive sport because it doesn’t involve a ball. That is why I think that cheerleading is just as much as a sport than any other…
Cheerleading is made up of five main components: stunting, tumbling, dancing, jumping, and cheering. The two main and most impressing aspects of the sport, tumbling and stunting, both require intense training both mentally and physically. Cheerleaders must mentally overcome the fear of possibly injuring themselves and they must build up physical strength, endurance, and coordination in able to increase the level of difficulty in their stunting and tumbling. Achieving the skills necessary to become a great cheerleader can take many years of learning new skills and routines. Although it is a difficult…
Competition cheer is one type of cheerleading. It is usually associated with a gym that teaches tumbling, gymnastics, and cheerleading all in one. Most of the squads have more than one coach such as a tumbling coach, a stunting coach, and a choreographer. Competition cheerleaders have one main objective which is to compete. Since they are competing, the squad must be dedicated to practicing and performing. The cheerleaders do not cheer for other sports such as basketball or football like in high school. They also do not use offense or defense cheers, but they use “competition cheers” instead. Just like being in other sports in school, you must try out to be on the team. Competition tryouts are a lot harder than in high school. You must go through…
When most people think of cheerleading their minds go straight to seeing girls and guys standing on the sideline of a football or basketball game. During this time the main purpose is to get the crowed involved in what is going on for the team. The fans more than likely…
The first point I would like to raise Is, how is cheerleading different from any other sport? An official sport has to include physical activity, competition, and a winner has to be declared. Cheerleading meets all of those. There is lots of physical movement in cheerleading. They are doing flips, running around, and sometimes there is dance in some of the routines. Cheer does have competition teams and if your competing against another team a winner is obviously going to be declared. Many Americans say, in cheerleading you don’t have an object like a ball. Many sports do not, take cross country for example they don’t use an object but they are still running around and being active just like in cheerleading.…
Cheerleading is one of my most defining life experiences. The sport allowed me to explore not only my leadership qualities, but also my own mentorship abilities. From a newbie to cheerleading in middle school, I grew and developed into a role model on my cheerleading team in high school.…
I recall being the youngest girl, cheering with others several years older than me, when I began Area Youth Football cheerleading way back at the age of five. I had tried other sports such as soccer and basketball, however they didn't electrify me as cheerleading did. I instantly fell in love with the sport of cheerleading. To this day, I would not even consider changing my commitment to cheerleading, for it has positively influenced my life and taught me countless lessons that will stick with me forever.…
Not only that, but they perform like they only have an hour left to live. Girls are chosen to be on a team by their level of tumbling and stunting ability. The levels range from one to five where five is the highest and most advanced. As you move up the levels, the risk of physical injury increases because you are doing harder stunts and tumbling. Although cheerleading might seem simple, the athletes practice many days a week to keep all of their stunts in the air and land their tumbling perfectly. Competition season is from fall to spring, and during that time cheerleaders come from all over the country to meet for competitions. Cheerleaders work hard even when they feel like they are dying so that they can have that split-second on stage when the announcer calls their team as first place. It is an amazing feeling to walk out of the competition a winner, and that is what makes the work worth it.…
Most people have an activity that they highly enjoy and would recommend to other people close to them. Some activities that people enjoy can be educational while others are more of a hobby. An activity that is educational that I enjoy doing is cheerleading. I have been a cheerleader every year since I was seven years old. Needless to say, I love the sport and everything that has to do within the sport. Cheerleading is a sport that teaches discipline, assertiveness, and how to form bonds with other people. Cheerleading for females officially began in the 1920's at the University of Minnesota. In addition, NFL teams started using cheerleaders to add a little support in the 1960's. It more than likely originated a little earlier than the 1920's,…
Failure for me is hard to deal with, especially when it has to do with others. I try admittedly to do whatever I can for my teammates and for me personally. I have been cheering since the 7th grade and it has been the most amazing experience of my life. I personally think it turned me from a shy 12-year-old not having a lot of friends, into an outgoing fun to be around 17-year-old. With the fun times I have had during cheer, comes the hard times I have had to deal with. Whether it has been coach changing or teammates leaving the hardest thing I have had to deal with has been my tumbling. When I tried out for high school cheer I did not have the tumbling to make the team, but the coach took me in any way and I eventually got the tumbling I needed,…
“You are not an athlete.” Tanya said. “You do nothing, except stand around on the sidelines half-cheering.” Jaqueline added. “That’s not true! Us cheerleaders are NOT some rec team. We are all-star cheerleaders. There’s a difference. We put in hundreds of hours of work we put into a two and a half minute routine.” I fired back. “Whatever.” Tanya said and walked away with Jaqueline snickering next to her. The activity of cheerleading should be a sport for many reasons. It has many risks, and requires rigorous training. Over 1.5 million people all over the world participate in cheerleading, and that is just all-star. Cheerleading should be considered a sport.…
The group told her that they were fine and the plaintiff seemed to be upset because the group had not successfully completed the stunt. At no point did the plaintiff tell her that she had been injured, nor did she exhibit any symptoms of a concussion in her presence.…
While not a community in the traditional sense, the one that is most important to me is cheerleading. To me, my teammates are my second family. They push me physically, academically, and socially. Naturally, I am a shy person and I seldom engage in unnecessary social interactions. However, my teammates influence my social behavior by encouraging me to step out of the box that I often trap myself in. I have determined that this is especially useful in my academics because it has pushed me to become more engaged within the classroom and not to be timid when offering my ideas.…
Each observation location varied depending on which group of athletes was being focused on. The two groups of athletes that I have observed and worked with consisted of athletes from both UNI cheerleading as well as TNT cheerleading. UNI cheerleading is comprised of college age athletes both male and female that are a part of either the co-ed or all-girl squad. The location that my observations and research for UNI cheerleading took place in the UNI-dome, the Mcleod Center, and the West Gym on UNI’s campus. When working with athletes from TNT cheerleading I went to their gym located in Cedar Falls. I received oral consent from both the parent and the athlete if under the age of 18.…
