Coaching in early intervention is an effective and personable way to interact with families. Coaching allows for the parents to be involved in their child’s development, and what skills and strategies will be used in order for the child to reach their developmental goals. When the early interventionist takes on the role of a coach instead of a mentor, consultant, or supervisor, then they are better able to build a relationship with the family. The coach can take a step back and allow for the family to explain to them what they need in order for their routine, or life to be more successful. In order for coaching to be effective, and beneficial for both parties it must meet the five characteristics of coaching. The first characteristic is joint planning. This is when the coach and the coachee work together to formulate the plan. The coach does not just provide the plan, but the two work together to come up with a plan that the coachee understands and thinks that they can actually implement in their life. The next characteristic is observation. This is key, it occurs both by the coach and the coachee. The coachee can observe the coach in order to gain insight on how to perform a strategy, while the coach can observe the coachee in order to be able to provide constructive and positive feedback to support and guide the coachee during the implementation of a new strategy. The coach can also observe in order to gain a deeper understanding into the coachee’s routine that they would like to change. The next characteristic of coaching is action. This is when there is a teachable moment that occurs during the day. This allows the coach to provide the coachee with an opportunity to practice their skills, or to discuss a different skill that they could use to be more effective next time. Kindness is a characteristic that is beneficial for a coach because coaches are involved in the family’s personal life. The coach may be a part of personal and emotional events in a family’s life. It is the coach’s job to ensure that they are understanding, empathetic, and express their concern for the family. I find that I am a very giving and kind person and that I often work harder to make sure that others are happy before I worry about myself. This is beneficial as a coach because I will always put my coachee and their child first, and will make sure that they have everything they need to be successful. The characteristic of personable is beneficial as a coach because I will be working with a lot of families and other professionals. I need to be able to form relationships with these individuals quickly that are genuine. In order to do this, I will have to be able to talk to them, take an interest in their life, and be pleasant. These are all characteristics of a personable person, which is why being personable will be beneficial to coaching. The next characteristic that I have that will be beneficial for coaching is patience. It is important to be patient as a coach because your coachee may not always understand the strategy so you will have to explain it to them.
